Since I'm still a "newbie" on this board and I'm sure many of you know more about music recording than myself, I have a rather complicated question to ask.

I'm a revolutionary hip hop creator. And I need to optimize my studio for the "best" configuration possible. If possible give me your opinion on how to best assemble my equipment.
----------------
MPC 2000XL

Modules & Keyboards (Microkorg,K Station, Bass Station, Proteus2k, Mo Phatt, Boss SP 505 Sampler & Alesis SP16)

Pentium 3 PC with Delta 44 card, Soundforge, Acid Pro 4.0, Cool Edit Pro, Fruityloops Studio, Sonar 2.0XL

Mac G4 with MOTU 828 w/ Audiodesk software

also: (Tascam cdrw700 burner, 2 patchbays, Yamaha aw4416, Tascam portastudio, Behringer 12 track mixer, Behringer Virtualizer Pro(FX), Midisport 4x4, Alesis Nanoverb(FX),

Any ideas? Comments? or advice that would help? what should i have in my setup?

I'm a gear junkie.

The gear list is hardly "revolutionary".... if you want to be revolutionary why don't you try creating music with basic household items! :p ;)

this is doubtful....but, OK....

OK...since you are a gear slut already......
buy a les Paul...a 314CE Taylor...a P-bass
A ludwig wood set with Zildjan brass...and an array of mics...

then make some music...
You have plenty of gear dude...you can't tell me that you haven't already figured out how to hook it up....can you?

maybe I shouldn't have put "revolutionary" in there. I asked a simple question, but some folks can get past half a paragraph. Talk shit or help. Simple as that.

Not sure if I lurk and read the post for education or entertainment--but ones like this sure are entertanining!!!

Get some good monitors. Treat your control room.

If you've got all those modules and the 828 talking to each other and the Mac and vice versa you're configured.:)

I take it you're patching modules in and out as you go. Get or build the best quality patch cables you can find. You have some good modules and should get some very fat audio from them if you're cabled up properly.

The next "level" would be GOOD outboard preamps and reverbs/FX. All of your modules/synths would sound better through a very good quality pre.

How are you doing vocals?

I would suggest better monitors:

Alesis M1 Actives

Mackie HR 824's

Genelec 1031A's

And a GREAT A to D converter:

Take a look at Apogee. ;)

Good things always come at a price. I didn't know we had to be "tough" on this board for advice. I thought it only involved typing.:) But I guess our posts don't dictate courtesy, we do. Thanks for the assistance and the links from those who aren't afraid to be nice. And to those who love to veer off on "revolutionary" tangents, fuck you very much.

Getting back to the question at hand... I don't do vocals. Not yet.
But I do have an SM 57, an SM 58 & a Rode NT1000. I've been thinking of buying some Antares Auto Tune software or maybe a vocal processor.

When I first started posting at this, I used to get razzed on the regular.

Hip hop whith a bunch of samplers and *no* vocals? That is revolutionary. I hope it catches on.-Richie

Well, it's not really revolutionary. There are quite a number of artist doing it. http://www.sfweekly.com/issues/2003-12-17/reviewed2.html/1/index.html It definitely won't get you on the charts, but it's a noble cause all the same.:)

Poet,

Yeah, I would agree with riley357 and Spin's original suggestions to start out with a good room and good monitors. This will save you from wasting a lot of time and energy on bad mixes.
