I have just "finished" my music room. I have many questions and I am hoping you all can help me out. I am basically confused as to where I should put my monitoring/mixing area, and what I should do about room acoustics and foam.

First of all, should my monitoring area be in the actual recording room or is it best to have it in a separate room? The problem I see with having it in the actual recording area is the noise of the computer (fans, etc). However, if it were in another room, I am not able to put a window in my wall so it will be sort of isolated from the recording area. I have my computer in my bedroom, so I don't like the idea of having to put up acoustic home in areas of my bedroom. I could do it, but is that really how it should be?

Part II: Room acoustics! Here is an overhead view of my music room:

Next are some actual photos of the room. The first is of the ceiling which you can see is pitched. I am confused as to what to do with that. The second photo is a view of the east side and the third photo is a view of the west side.

Are the 2 windows going to be a problem, or can I work with them? Also notice the 3 horizontal support beams (north to south).

Should I texture and paint the room and then worry about setting it up acoustically? I've read that I should not deaden the whole room by pasting foam everywhere, so it sounds like I need to paint, etc. first. The floor is rough plywood, but I am going to carpet it. I am not worrying about a vocal booth yet, but I plan to have an area for this in the room.

I hope I gave enough details, but it is hard because although I know what I want, and about audio recording, I do not know all about acoustics. I have read some websites and books on acoustics, but I am having trouble applying everything.

In the end I want to be able to have a keyboard corner, an organ corner, a vocal corner, and a drum corner. I will have a couch or something for guitars. It sounds like a lot, but the drums will take up the most room and that is not important for me to worry about right now. I have the layout of these areas in my head, but I thought I'd mention it just incase it is important in the placement of various acoustic treatments. I want to be able to mic or direct input any instrument that is capable. The latter isn't a problem, but I want to be sure about the acoustics for mic'ing.

If you need to know more specifics, please ask. Thank you.

EDIT: Sound leakage does not cause a problem for me, so I don't need to solve for that.

BOINGGGGG!!!
You have a BLANK canvas and nothing but time on your side. You are very lucky.
I would leave the rafters exposed and hang "clouds"
Also, from my quik drunken look, I would put the front of the studio facing the wall with the door off to the side...
That will give you symetry with those bothersome windows on the side (which tou can and should cover in foam to prevent reflections)

Lemme see what I can draw up...........

Need a beer 1st

A lot of time, yes. "Clouds" okay, I am going to look those up. So your saying you'd probably put the computer, etc in the recording room? (along eastern wall)

Hmm that is interesting, I never thought about it that way...

You can always buy/build a quiet box for the computer. What's in the next room? Is that your tracking room??

Actually this room is meant to be the tracking room, but I am unsure as to whether I should put my computer in here also.

oh, well hell.... why didn't you say so :D
Naw, don't put your computer in there.... that is where you will have open mics, right? buy or build a quiet box for your control room

I feel lika an ass :p

Yeah, open mics will be in here. Okay, so computer should be in separate control room. That is what I was originally thinking, and works out better.

Besides the fact that the live room should be, well, more live than the control room. Very different acoustical design goals.

You can orient things however you want but do as much as possible to provide:

- good seating position
- nice distance behind the mix position
- left to right symmetry - including the roof pitch
