I would appreciate any help given. My problem is this. I have a 2 track home cassette recorder, the type with rack stereo units. It has dolby B noise reduction. First I record a drum track from my keyboard, pluged directly into the unit. Than I use another recorder & cassette, I playback the drum track, than I record a Bassline in the other recorder. Than with the Drum & Bassline on one cassette I use my 4 head stereo vcr to mix the two tracks to stereo. I continue doing this for each instrument I add, but when it is all done the tracks sound distorted & muddy even with the dolby NR. I'm I mixing too much? Or can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

Avoid any use of mixing recorded tracks played back through a stereo and then miced, with new tracks. Use the stereo as a monitor only. Record the taped tracks mixed directly with live. This may require some sort of mixer depending on the input circuits in your various recorders. With tape, it's gonna get muddy after a few generations no matter what you do; you'll get there (mudland) faster if your tape decks are all shabbier than that VCR.

There is no way around it, you are going to add noise every time you bounce tracks back and forth. Find a friend to play with so you can do half as many takes and get twice the sound!

I hate to use "spending money" as an answer, but in this case it may be the answer to your problem. With so many products on the market to choose from there is certainly one in your price range.Try to look at it from the point of view of a songwriter. The more time you spend messing around trying to make equipment do something it was'nt designed to do. The less time you will spend making music. Start putting a couple of bucks away each week untill you can afford one of the many wonderfull products available. In the long run I think that your frustration level will go down and your creativity will go up...

Amen to that last post! I picked up a new Fostex cassette 4 track for under $200. and it sounds pretty good! Much better than transfering back and forth from 2 machines.
It is so small I put it in my suitcase when traveling, so I can record song Ideas for later use. Save up your lunch money and in a few months.....
