Home Recording Beginner Question

I am pretty new to recording at home, and while I can usually get the guitars, basses etc. to come out alright, I have been having alot of trouble with flat, weak sounding vocals.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should be doing? I have been going straight into the computer from the mic (sm58) which I hear is the wrong way, but I am not sure exactly what to do to fix it.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

The 58 isn't exactly a sparkly mic if you're looking for that sort of thing. You may try a large diaphragm condensor mic into a real preamp into a decent converter and see if that does it.

That pc sound card probably isn't doing you any favors.

This is your first step. Use the SM58 and your sound card to start, but get a preamp. Any at all will be better than what you have, but something like the DMP3 will probably give you the best bang for your buck.
