My question may be very remedial to most on here... but here it goes! I would like to take four imputs (guitar, bass, electric drums, and mic) and somehow interface them into my computer using all four tracks independent of each other. Is this something that is possible? We have everything going through a Beringer 1202 mixer right now. We've been mixing all of our stuff (terrribly I might add) so far and then sending it all into the MIC imput on the computer. What kind of interface (hopefully cheap) do we need to get this right! Thanks in advance, and I hope to make some great connections on this board.

It's possible, even with the soundcard you have.

But to do it you'll need to do overdubs.

Use the LINE IN to your soundcard rather than the mic in. That's just for cheesey computer mics.

Check out www.8thstreet.com or musicians friend for multi-channel soundcards.

You can spend anywhere from maybe $250 to $2500 for 4 channels of AD/DA depending on how nice you want your converters to be.

Thanks, I'll look into it... I kind of figured that overdubs would be the way we'd have to go for now... What software would you suggest for a novice on a budget?

p,

if you have some money, I might suggest looking at the Aardvark Q10 card or it's little brother (don't know name.)

The Q10 cost $750 and gives you 8 inputs. You can bypass the beriger mixer all together and record direct to the computer all 4 of your tracks. Or better yet, how about 3 mics for drums, one for bass, one for guitar, and one for voice. Then you can also do over dubs.

The Q10 comes with some free software that will allow you do to your mixing and add reverb and such.

I also once used N-Track software which is just about free. It would be another great choice.

Wow, you guys are the best! I'm still working on it, and far from fixed... Took back the Beringer, and got a Delta 44 I/O box, but now I'm having trouble with that. But I can't wait until I can send each of you a CD from our band. Keep the ideas coming, and I hope I can contribute to this forum ASAP!
