Home Recorder Friendly OS

I really don't get all the bad press on win 98se. I run Vegas on a 98 machine w/1ghz, 512 DDR and 180gig of HD with NO problems. I've never seen the end of my track count (well over 40) and never had problems with piles of plugins. This is the fourth 98 computer I've built and I dont see a need to buy any other OS.

I like 98 because almost every concievable issue has a fix by now.

You guys are making me wonder if I am missing the boat. I am running almost the same set up as Jake and I don't really have a crash problem. I do however have a fair amount of latency to keep things stable.

I'm a little spooked about the whole wdm driver thing. I run a p3 1ghz with 512ram and a echo layla 24/96 and cw9.0. If I go to win2000 or xp I can still use the same drivers if all else fails right?

and If i do use the same drivers will I see an improvement still??

Sorry to butt in:)

I have to disagree with your games statement RWhite. That was only a problem when 2K was first introduced...most manufacturers weren't used to crazy concepts like hardware abstraction :)

Anyhow, I'm a serious gamer and 2K is my OS of choice. Any game that would work on XP will work on 2K and vice versa, aside from a few goofy quirks here and there. I haven't run into a new game that doesn't run on 2K in a long time. ('cept for really crappy games or kids games...kids games are the WORST)

Yeah, except that you have to dedicate your machine to recording or dual boot :)

I still haven't really made up my mind on what I want to get, both XP and 2k seem really good.

I just want something that can run good, support all my hardware (which is not much in the first place), stable, keep my broadband connection running fast, able to custom install to cut out all the fat (crap programs that i don't need), great for recording, great for surfin' the net, etc.

I'm not much of a gamer so that doesn't really factor in my decision, I do play games, just not too often.
