The sm7b is awesome!!! it's like 100 times better than my baby bottle which cost $200 more.

I don't understand why everyone was telling me I needed a better preamp with it though. I can make it clip with my mbox2. Yeah, it's almost all the way up but people were saying I needed 60db but my mbox2 works just fine with the 50 db it has.

what is it? something to do with noise or what? If you have a small room and you don't have all the absorption you need, go with the sm7b. woooaaaa!!

Interesting....I know they get a lot of love, but what specifically makes it that much better than the baby bottle? Also, what is your source? For singing the SM7 usually requires 60dB or more of gain, FWIR. It's one of the lowest output dynamic mics, as far as I know. I have a pretty quiet singing style and I need 60dB gain with my PR35, which has a higher output than the SM7.
 
it takes the room sound out which I know I'm getting some comb-filtering b/c I have a small room and it's not fully treated. the baby bottle picks up everything.

quiet singing works just fine aswell with my 50db mbox2
 
Good news that it's working out for you! Glad you tried out the minimum prior to dropping a bunch of $ on an additional component you don't appear to need. Are you boosting the gain on the tracks in software?
 
Make no mistake the SM7 is a mans microphone...works great with my voice...I picked it because of its use on the Bob Seger...LedZeppelin...and BadCompany records...Micheal Jackson used one too on "Thriller"...this is a set of guys who could have any mic but this was what the engineers ordered in those sessions.

I only break out the C414 for the girls.
 
I've used an SM7 on just about everything you can imagine except as room mics or a pair for drum OH's...though I bet they'd work there too. It's the most flexible mic you can imagine.

Glad to hear you found a good solution for everything! And man you must be recording a loud source for it to only need 50 db!
 
that's what I don't get: it's not loud

I can whisper in to it if my knob is all the way up

Beats me how he does it. He's gotta be boosting the gain somewhere else in the vocal chain if the mbox only goes up to 50dB.

there must be something that I'm not seeing here. How will I know if there is an unacceptible amount of noise being recorded?

right now my levels are around -18dbfs and even higher and it fits in the mix fine - which is just guitar and sampled drums so far.
 
Hey dood...

With nothin else goin on in the mix, crank up your monitors a bit and listen to just the mic track before the vocals start or in between the verse / chorus parts and see if you can hear an audible hiss.

If you've got hiss, that adds to the noise floor.
