Holding Notes with an MPC2000xl

Hey what's up peeps.
I got a quick question, well maybe a few.

I'm in afghanistan, in the army, and I just ordered a mpc2000xl and a motif 6. I'm getting the mpc shipped here to me, and the motif shipped to my guitarist's crib.

Now my question is:
1. With the mpc and the sample sounds I have, let's say it's a short piano key(like a one note sound), how could I play that note as a whole note or a half note, or however long i wanted to play it, as if i was holding down a piano key.

2. since i'm not going to be making beats on a real system or within our studio setup, does the headphone amp in it push headphones under 100 ohms very well, or would i need to buy a headphone amp like the ones sold by HeadRoom, www.headphone.com

3. i also ordered the soundset called "Drumz Phatta than Momma" from www.mpcsounds.com, has anyone ever bought samples from them, and are they good sounds??????

I believe that's it. Hell it feels wonderful knowing i'm bout to move from making beats on Rebirth to the MPC2000XL hahahahahahaa, but I've done some pretty wicked stuff with Rebirth using Renovator to import and make my own mods, and using some sounds I bought from www.banginbeats.com. If anyone wants to hear a lil somethin hit me.

I appreciate yalls knowledge

Guess no ONE KNOWS

I Guess no one knows how to hold a note using the mpc

hahaha...

-man, this a simple ass question u r asking

-u getting an MPC and a Motif

-by your question, i assume you are gonna use the sequencer on the MPC

-in that case, when u sample sounds onto your MPC like bass or something...you will wanna play a bassline

-you will basically use your Motif 6 as a "controller" and play your bassline on the keyboard (not the drum pads on the MPC)

I'm not going to be using the Motif though

Yeah Dawg, i would do that if i was using the Motif but i'm not going to be using the motif.

See I'm in afghanistan right now, and I'm getting the mpc shipped to me here, but i'm getting the motif shipped to maryland(that's where my guitarist is).

What I wanna do is be able to play half and whole notes on the mpc while i'm here, in afghan, so I can pretty much build whole songs. It's like me and the guitarist are pretty creative, but I might be feeling something over here that i want to do that requires half and whole notes that I can't do because I don't have the motif here.

Feel ME!!!!!!!!

holla at me

well...

-in that case, u might have to spend $150 on a cheap/decent KB controller

-i don't think there is a way for the drum pads to react like Keys

my guess

well i guess you COULD do it like this, only if your sampling a long note though
say you sample a loooong note
you can go to "programs" (shift+program)
drum 1
params
and on the lower right hand corner where it says overlap: POLY, you can change that to "NOTE OFF"
what this would do is make it so that if you let go of the pad it will stop playing the note, so if you hold it down longer it will keep playing the note for as long as you want/the sample goes
thats all i can really think of

Man cats good for helping out around here... Just don't hold your breath waiting on it...

Cats good for sleeping... Like me on this post. I read it and said I'd come back to it ... Got busy...

For a endless note you will want to set the sample to LOOP in the sample TRIM/LOOP/EDIT area. You gotta find a decent loop point (whatever sounds right) turn LOOP to ON then go into the PROGRAM scence and change the sound to NOTE OFF. Now when you press the pad it'll play the original sound until it reaches the end then it'll play your LOOP selection all until you release the pad...

The Bangin Beats cat hangs out on the web and so does the cat from WWW.SOUNDSFORSAMPLES.COM... I've seen very few cats dissatified with the sounds they make... They are quick to say their sounds are industy standard sounds and from what I heard they pretty much are... I say search the web but if time is a factor then they seem to be good route...

Don't know much about headphone amps myself...

Peace...

that would be called making your own patch right?

Kinda of but not really... It's not the same as using a full out synth. Most of the raw internal sounds in synth like a TRITON will already have loop points set... Yo just gotta set the attack, decay, osillators, filters, and shit...

WHAT IS A SYNTH?

^ Some good info if you are trying to get into programming...

i'm about to hit the link up right now. i was just sitting here trying to get a sample to loop and record it as a longer sample, but it's kind of hard for me. i may be going about it the wrong way. i was trying to set loop points on a sample in acid and just have it keep looping while i was recording a longer file.

so this is it what they are talking about right here right?

By adding 72 pin SIMM modules* you can expand the memory to a maximum of 64 Mbytes (two 32 Mbyte SIMM modules). This lets you record up 11 minutes and 38 seconds of mono sampling. You can record one-shot samples as well as phrase samples, and use the zero-cross automatic detection function to easily create smooth loops.

That 72 pin simm is to increase the sampler memory for sounds you want to sample into your synth. That's also the where you store wave files like the ones you'd cop from bangin beats.

I might be going too far but...

One shot samples are usually hits like kick, snare, hat, sub kicks, efx shots, and what not. With these type thingds you'll only want one sounds to be triggered by the note assigned. When you want a bass or piano or something then you will want to take a note here and a not there... Like say you got a C#2 bass note sample... You can tune that C#2 note down a bit and get the next 5 or 6 notes below it and up for the 5 or 6 notes above it. After say five or more notes the sample may play to short (unless you got loop points set) so you'll want to use a sample of the next note that you can assign. So then you'd maybe skip five notes and pitch tune that note down five and up five... Do that til you got the whole scale coverd properlly... That's what they call MULTISAMPLING... That's similar to how they have most of the internal sounds (the raw samples not factory program) that are in the boards memory. The 64mb allows you to add you own sounds... It can be set up as multisamples or single shot samples depending on how you assign em. You can then take those samples and run em through the TRITON's synth engine... Add the filters, envelopes, and effects, and what not. After you get it how you want it it's save as a PROGRAM. That would be creating a PROGRAM from scratch.

As far as the looping shit it's like this... Say you got a sine wave which is pretty much a simple S shaped wave form... When you get of in the 80hz and below this is a great bub bass... Say you got a .05 second sample but want this to play for 8 hours str8... You'd want to loop it. You find a point where the S shape is 0 that'd be your start... Now select a section of the S until you reach a point where it's 0 again. Select this as you end point. Now the wave will play from beginning to end and when it reaches the end then it will jump back to the loop start point and play that selection again and a again until you release the key. From there you'd assign the notes to the keys like I was explaining before.

A phrase loop is like that but it for a whole phrase like a drum loop or bass loop.

I have never used the zero X crossing (as far as i know) or whatever but I think its to smooth the END point into the START by doing a X type fade in/oout...

From what I understand the TRITONS synth programming is no joke so you'd probably wanna work with the factory mutltisamples to create new sound before you expand anything and make shit more complicated on yourself... 2 or 4 mbs sample memory is enough to learn... You should be good out the box until you really start feeling the board.

I hope that its a answer in there somwhere... i just started typing and not looking back...

my man, you got it going on. i read what you posted and i understand more. i was going into sound forge trying to find loop points but i wasn't magnifying in enough to find the zero points, as a result i was getting a popping clicking type noise at the loop points. makes a whole lot of sence now. i'm cracking open sound forge right now to check out what i just learned. friday is the date that i should have the korg, i'm tracking it on fed ex's web site.
