So I've been thinking a lot about mics lately, and am having some trouble. I want to ask "what's the best ______ (vocal, guitar, piano) mic to use? But I know there is no simple answer to that. But that doesn't help me, seeing, I have NO expirience whatsoever. I can't use what works best for me, since I don't have any expirience.

So what to do? I've got a high soft silkyish voice, and have no idea what to get, I've hear the at4050 is good, the mxl v69 is good, the rode k2 is good.....GAH! I don't know!

And if anyone has any good mics for piano or accoustic guitar, that would be great too.....

As you can see, I don't have much to go on, and am overall looking for some help in this matter. I'm ok with spending 400 bucks on a mic, but if there's a good mic for under that, I'm good with that too :D

I have two condenser mics. AT 3035 and SP C1. I like the C1 for my acoustic guitar and my voice. I like the AT for the voice of a female singer in my group. But, I like the C1 for the other female in the group. Neither mic is "better". I just seem to like one more than the other in certain cases.

the at4050 is great as an all arounder. particularly nice on some voices and guitar. One of my favorite pairs.

Have you tried a pair of 57's for piano? Its cool to have the notes move along the stereo spread!

Also, for all around purposes, you might want to look at a SDC vocal mic, like a CAD 95 or something.

As long as the 4050's are going for $350 at 8th Street, they are the answer to all "what mic should I get?" questions. :D

hey thanks guys!!! So it's now between the hamburg and the 4050.....what if I get both? is mixing two mics together to record stereo piano or guitar an ok idea, or is it a good idea to match?

You could try an M-S configuration, since the 4050 is capable of Figure-of-8 pattern. You wouldn't need a matched pair of mics for that.

It's on! Hamburg + 4050 for more sound options, vrs. pair of 4050s for more stereo micing options. It's anybody's race to win!

Aside: aren't the Vienna the brighter mics? Do I remember somebody trying both, and saying that it's easy to roll some highs off the Vienna and sound like a Hamburg, but not the other way around?

not the biggest fan of the 20 series of AT mics, stick with the 40 series, or the the hamburg.

and, yes.... you can use 2 different mics on the same source at the same time, any way you want.
i promise the police won't arrest you for it or anything.
(although some people will act like they will)

can it still sound as good as matched pairs?

Oh, and I have a high silkysih voice, and I like the high-end and breathy sound that comes along with voices like that, so maybe I should get a vienna instead?

it won't sound like a matched pair, because it won't be. but in doing it you won't run into any drastic problems.
just the left side of the whatever may be a little brighter/bassier than the right side.
things like that.

i'd get the hamburg, but that's me.

aw crap I still don't know wether or not I want a pair of AT4050's or Hamburgs......I could afford Hamburgs more, but maybe I should wait and save up for 4050's......

haha oh man that would take ages.....I need a pair like NOW though, and I don't know which to get.

Hamburgs man Hamburgs. If you don't like 'em sell 'em and get the 4050's but meanwhile if you have the money now for a set of Hamburgs times a wasting. :-) I'd be willing to bet you like them and keep them.

woah, I got this guy to sell me an at4050 for 280 DOLLARS. I think I'll go with that, that's just too good of a deal to not take.

IMO You might be happier with the V69. It tends to be a little bit darker and has some character. Where as the 4050 tends to be brighter but more neutral.

well I got the at4050. I got it knowing I would most likely sell it and get a nice 60 buck profit off it. But I still don't know if I want the at4050's or Hamburgs. I like what I've heard of the Hamburgs, I really do, and I've heard samples and they seem great! The only thing that is getting me is at4050's are twice as expensive as hamburgs.....does that mean if I get hamburgs instead of at4050s, I'll be sacrificing quality? And again, perhaps the at4050's just aren't suited for my voice? To hear my voice, I've got a link to it a few replys up. Thanks for the help!
