Hmm.... automation troubles

I have a new problem I have been experiencing more and more lately.

Here's an example. Last night I had an audio track that I set a volume envelope on. I faded it in over about a measure to the peak volume. Now when I would play it back, It did not recognize the volume change - actually it didn't play anything until the envelope reached it's peak, when it would "kick in" all the sudden and play fine. When I faded it back out at the end of the wave file, the evelope worked fine and faded like it should. Several attempts at adjustment and playback did not help any.

Now here's the deal - closing and reopening Sonar, solved the problem and when I would hit play after reopening the volume faded in, as it should. But then a little later it started doing the same thing and I had to save, close and reopen to start working again.

This has happened with all types of envelopes on all types of audio tracks, including those with my DXi's and VSTi's. Volume, pan, or automation from an effect, it doesn't matter. Now this happens often enough to be annoying, but not often enough to pinpoint anything that I would be doing wrong.

Maybe related, but probably not, I have also been having problems with the GUI switching between screens. A lot of the time remenants of the console will stick and remain when I pull up the track view or piano roll, or vice versa. Also when I open and close my VST/DXi's This happens A LOT.

I'm wondering if a fresh install is in order, or if somebody has any ideas? Thanks.

SBLive! - yeah I know

This sounds really weird.

The envelopes... they are a continuous (not a dotted) line, right?

And if not... I blame the SB Live, but it also sounds like you have problems with your videocard? Which one is it? Have you updated all drivers?

Yeah, continous :D not the dotted line.

OK, the SBLive! is a Dell OEM version, which has causes many headaches. If you go to the Dell forums you will see many, many irate customers upset about their SB!. For some reason Creative Labs does not recognize the Dell OEM Soundblaster's so they can't be updated. Dell also does not offer any sort of updated drivers so the card is "as is". Which also means that I am forced to use the MME drivers because when using WDM drivers Sonar can only operate in Mono - and I can't download the update that fixed this bug. Also the Dell version doesn't support SoundFonts (but that's another story :D)

Video Card is a 64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce4 MX. I haven't checked for new drivers, or if any are available. I really haven't had any other trouble graphic-wise on my computer.

Thanks for the response moskus. A new soundcard was in the near, near future, but then Sonar3 came along, so that's on hold for the moment ;)

I've had audio tracks that fail to be included in a 'bounce' or export that was traced to clip envelopes that happened to start at 'full off' at the begining of a song. But not what you're discribing.

I've toyed with the idea of the kxdrivers ever since 2.2 came out so I could use ASIO, but kept putting it off because I had planned to buy a proper sound card and was getting by OK with the MME drivers if I bounced to audio enough. Maybe it's time to take another look.

Originally I thought my problem was with upgrading to the cakewalk wrapper from fxpansion's because I first noticed it with my VST effect's automation shortly after I upgraded. But it doesn't happen all the time and I've also noticed it with my DX plugs now too.

Thanks again for the help.
