Hitting the "ceiling" in Samp - suggestions

I'm using Samplitude 7 to record vocals only. The problem is, it seems like I'm hitting the celing. While I record, I'm watching the meters in samp and on my pre. Everything looks great. However, when I see the recorded wave, wherever my volume level line is on the object it's flattened out and distorting. It's like I've hit the celing, sonically. Is there anyway to keep me from maxing out? And it's not even a very high level! Neither is the pre.

How are you hooking your mic pre up to your computer?

Your mic pre is pushing a line out signal, which needs to go into an input on your interface/converter that's expecting line in, not mic in.

Also, once running line in into you interface, let it do it's thing on the computer side at untity gain with no extra boost. No boost in the interface software, and no boost on the input into Samplitude.

And maybe know something about basic gain structure before spending a grand on Smaplitude? You'll never have money that way.

I have had no problems the last 7 years using a yamaha sound card and Mx Trax. I'm now running my pre to a line in on my RME soundcard. There's no extra boost in Samp, and I am at unity gain.

When you play it back, what are the ouput meters reading? How does it sound? My guess is that the output meters are just fine and that it sounds fine. My bet is that you have the tracks set to be viewed in a zoomed in fashion on the track line. You may not be viewing the whole wav file. You may have the settings inadvertantly set to show -20 as the max or something. If this is the kind of problem you are having, everything is OK, you are just looking at it in a weird way:)

Xstatic,

Thanks for the suggestions. Meters fine at playback. Topping out around -4. Changed views (zoomed out to see entire track) still the peaks are not nice spikes in the wave but rather plateaus, crunched. Playback has audible distortion.

There are free versions of Samplitude btw, Glen.. I got one with a magazine. It's not crippled in any way, just fewer features.

you're either clipping the preamp or the converters - probably the converter, assuming the metering on the preamp isn't pegged into the red

You're right. I forgot about that. My mistake.
