Hissing

make sure your soundcard is set to record the LINE IN and your mic pre is plugged into the LINE IN , not the MIC IN.

yeah, that happens all the time. seriously there are probably at least 4 or 5 threads just like this one. and somebody always bashes behringer for the hissing. every time. seriously though, the behringer stuff would only hiss if they could find a way to copy the hiss from somewhere else. glad you got it working.

yea, i was just crackin on the berry pre a bit after sensing a rude tone in his post. why be rude when you're asking for help?

i personally have owned one small behringer mixer, when they first came out. i traded it to a friend and shortly after, one of the main outs stopped working. that was enough to turn me off. i hear that their early stuff was pretty unreliable compared to their current stuff.

maybe? maybe not?

the only piece of behringer gear i have is the HA4700 headphone amp. it does the job. it's noisy, and 2 of the channels run a bit hotter than the other 2, and i've noticed a degradation in sound over the last year or so.

i certainly wouldn't want to run anything critical or crucial through it....especially anything that was in my monitoring (or heaven forbid recording) chain. but for powering headphones loud enough to be heard over drums and roaring amps, it does that just fine.

given the crapulent sound of that thing, i usually cringe when i think about a behringer mic preamp or monitors.....but hey, more power to those who use em and think they're fine. :D

cheers,

Ive heard exactly the opposite. I got a small mixer from them maybe 6 years ago and it still runs fine...use it with my PA. I made a freaking album using only the pres on that mixer and you would never, ever know it.

ight well i was gonna get a new pre amp anyways... i guess ill just get one sooner than i thought... im gettin the DMP3

that's like, barely an upgrade. why don't you buy a sound card.

while i completely disagree that the dmp3 is "barely an upgrade", i DO (and totally) concur that a soundcard should be #1 on your list. check out the m-audio audiophile 2496 PCI card. excellent card for only $100.

*then* get the dmp3......

btw, what mic are you using? apologies if i missed that earlier.....

yea i already ordered the 2496 yesterday... should be here next week sometime... after that im'a get the DMP3...

FALKEN, why do u say it is barely an upgrade? I have heard so many good things about this pre... what would u suggest?

my mic is an MXL V63M...

it sounds like they use really cheap components.

Try this:

Set up everything to record with the hissing sound. Turn the mic in the opposite direction. If the sound doesn't change, it's probably not ambient noise. Unplug the mic - if the sound doesn't change, it's not the mic or ambient noise. Unplug the preamp - if the sound doesn't change, the problem is the soundcard. If the sound goes away, the problem is the preamp.

Of course, as mentioned earlier, each component could be contributing a bit to the sum total, but most likely just one is contributing the majority.
