hi!

I've had same problem with 2 different recorders, hiss noise appears to recordings while recording very quiet sources, like ambient soundscape in a forest etc.

is it poor quality mic preamp which causes the hiss noise ?

1st recorder was Aiwa AM-F75

2nd recorder was Sony MZ-N1 (NET MD)

microphone used on both : audio-technica ATR25

and... what's best audio processing "trick" to get rid from the hiss noise ? :)

EQ, Noise Reduction plug-in or something else ?

Sounds like you need a mic with a hotter output. For the kind of work you are doing, the Earthworks QTC's might be ideal.

"hotter output"

sorry for being "mic newbie", but what it exactly means ? :)

"hotter" meaning outputs a louder signal. I doubt that both recorders have faulty pre's. Like LD said, I would definitely try a different mic. Also, maybe a different windscreen.

Send me a email if you get this message, what you need is a STEREO CONDENCER MICROPHONE/"it's battery powered such as the
"AUDIO-TECHNIA AT822" they can be had for about 200.00 off of e bay. And after that make sure that your LINE LEVEL VOLUME that's the one going into your MD is at least up to 28 and also your montering/head phones is up to 30 . I have both a portable MD and the AT822 and I get just as good Field Recordings and sound effects as any CD out there with effects. I also did a CD project with just my DAT and MIC/AT822, the mic is the Missing link to your problem.Zadokk@aol.com

Got an older type of the ECM range. This should be an integrated stereo mic with batery power, right? If so, they are easy in use and quite sturdy. Quality is good for the price, but nothing stellar. Use them for interview, quick recordings etc. with a pcm-m1.
