So... how does one go and find a good producer these days? How do I get Rick Rubin to come and do my band's CD? Or any well-known producer for that matter with several hits under their belt.

Unless you happen to be doing a member of the producer's family, you first either need to get signed to a label or at least come highly recommended to that producer by an experienced A&R guy.
Then the producer has to listen to your stuff and decide both that they think your act has legs, and that he/she is actually interested in doing something with your sound.
Yeah, I figured you needed to at least have some sort of major label support, or be reccomended. A friend's band was produced by one of the guys in The Black Keys, and I always wonder how stuff like that comes together.
It's always possible that a member of that band and the BK guy are cousins or otherwise personally connected; never underestimate the power of nepotism in this business (do you really think Miley Cyrus would be where she's at if her father was Billy Ray Pipefitter ).
But in general it takes getting one's self "discovered" by A&R somehow. Having a manager or agent that has the phone numbers of and is at least somewhat respected by the A&R guys can help greatly on that ladder.
Is your friend's band the Buffalo Killers? They opened for the Keys at a show I attended recently, and I remember reading that they were produced by one of the guys from the Black Keys. If so, you can let your friend know what I bought the album and it's pretty cool.
