The Way It Moves
So... how does one go and find a good producer these days? How do I get Rick Rubin to come and do my band's CD? Or any well-known producer for that matter with several hits under their belt.

You could send him a certified check and a nice letter, but usually the record company gets him involved in your project with or without your consent.

Unless you happen to be doing a member of the producer's family, you first either need to get signed to a label or at least come highly recommended to that producer by an experienced A&R guy.

Then the producer has to listen to your stuff and decide both that they think your act has legs, and that he/she is actually interested in doing something with your sound.

Cool, thanks for replying guys.

Yeah, I figured you needed to at least have some sort of major label support, or be reccomended. A friend's band was produced by one of the guys in The Black Keys, and I always wonder how stuff like that comes together.

Thanks

It's always possible that a member of that band and the BK guy are cousins or otherwise personally connected; never underestimate the power of nepotism in this business (do you really think Miley Cyrus would be where she's at if her father was Billy Ray Pipefitter ;) ).

But in general it takes getting one's self "discovered" by A&R somehow. Having a manager or agent that has the phone numbers of and is at least somewhat respected by the A&R guys can help greatly on that ladder.

Is your friend's band the Buffalo Killers? They opened for the Keys at a show I attended recently, and I remember reading that they were produced by one of the guys from the Black Keys. If so, you can let your friend know what I bought the album and it's pretty cool.

Nope.... my buddy's band is Brimstone Howl, from Lincoln, Nebraska. You might like them if you like the Keys :)
