I erased the first portion of your statement because it does nothing for the topic. IMO.

Well you're entitled to do that, obviously. I just saw some interesting parallels between rap and older forms of expression.

I'm surprised that you don't think rap is about independence - Is it not, to some extent, about the independence of a community or group? Anyone else have any feelings about this?

However, if all your community is playing, relative to rap songs, are cliche ridden rhyming about Guns/Women, therein lies the problem...Your Community!!! Rap is more diverese and global than ever, so it should be heard in it's entirety before any judgement should be passed.

Yeah, I agree - the problem is probably with my community. The point I was making is that, like Change of POETS said, the emphasis put on music by the labels makes it difficult to hear anything except the clichéd stuff in Ireland.

Edit: You don't think rap has, in some way at least, formed its own vocabulary? I take your point that this vocabulary already existed in urban communities, but it certainly added to it / strengthened it. Take a look at words like 'spitting', directly describes rap. I was mentioning it as a good thing.

I don't want you to get me wrong about all this - I was being positive about it. It's cool, though.

Be a homie, and hook up an interview for ya boy... :D

no doubt homie. I'll see what's up. The latest pricing he gave me was 3-4 pages full color, with front page for $300 (compared to $1500). I was actually thinking of doing something like an article for the underground scene, and have a few of us on there (BK, you, me and a few others) talking about it, that'll give us a nice sized publicity. We'll see.

I erased the beginning because I have no response to it, not because there is no parallel. It could be a valid point for all I know, I just hate commenting on things I have no knowledge of.
And I stand corrected if it sounded like I was denying that RAP was Independence, I just don't think that was the emphasis.
I don't think RAP has formed it's own language to the point where we can say "Rap has formed it's on language". I think it is an extension from what we already had with a different avenue of expressing it!
And I am not taking anything the wrong way, I love open dialogue!

+ 1 on that.

Remember what D nice said in Self-Destruction (Now that's HIPHOP!) LOL

"To each to teach is what rap intended!"

therein lies the problem...Your Community!!! now thats the kernel . . . the one seed which needs nourishin!!!

its more about what we listen to!!!!!! even back in the day - there had to be challenges from 1 artist to another on meaningful substance - not just "beef" - and many of the old school artists that we venerate for being "authentic" also tried their hands at "commercial bullshit" hip hop - some were simply not successful with it -

but as long as we allow the radio station (i.e. corp. america) to dictate what is and what is not rap, hip hop, important, then WE are the problem!! how often do we seek out UNKNOWN artists with messages?
