love the organ sound. what did you use?

Thanks...Mixmkr told me to get a keyboard. That's an Alesis qs6.1, and it's a preset...something like "Rock 4 Drawbar" or "Rock 4 Drawback" or "Play This To Cover Up The Fact That You Suck" or something like that. I appreciate the input...you're the first person who's listened to the version that's up, and I did pull back on the vox a bit, and brought the organ up. Glad to hear it's not off the meters...yet.

:D

hey... I kind of like it ... :)
ye the drummer would be good ... :) but these work too .... the performance is there on this IMHO, I find the mix a little too wet (too much verb) ... the lead was ... well ... i dunno ... :) ...

good singing ... like it ... I think I have more to say but got to listen some more...
cheers

Nice song. I really like your singing voice. Nice quality to it. Good writing - there are a few killer lines in the song ("I need to live for 200 years, cause I'm so slow to learn").

If it were me, I'd pull the vocals back slightly (but very slightly). Great lead playing. I thought the tone on the lead guit was a bit abrasive. Maybe you could tame a bit of the mids.

How about harmonies? There are great opportunities here.

Real good song.

Fed: hehehe...I can see that you're kinda' torn about this one. Man, that's okay with me :D. I know where you're coming from. I think the perspective on this song should be kinda' like, "It is what it is," and then critique your ass off. What it is is a pretty run-of-the-mill shot at a blues rendition turned GUITAR ANTHEM TOO LONG TO BE PLAYED ON THE RADIO kind of emotional thing...I'm stretching, but it doesn't hurt yet. Nothing more. You're never gonna' be able to turn me into a competent pop star, so don't worry. I promise (read as, "SWEAR") you're not gonna' hurt my feelings or anything. hehehe... :D. And yeah, it's wetter than a greased seal, and there's enough delay in the guitar tracks that you can almost feel yourself going BACK in time as the song progresses. At least that part was intentional...All I'm doing is ripping off Lynard Skynard ("Tuesday's Gone) and Prince ("Purple Rain") and the Black Crowes ("Seein' Things For The First Time"). I figured it was time for another one of these.

:D

Triple M - Man, I appreciate you listening to it. The one line you pointed out is the one I stole from Crawdad, and it kinda' started the ball rolling on this tune. I think you may be right about the mids in the gits (since they look like they're going to actually break the lights out of the middle of my meter!!!)...and I'm gonna' smooth 'em out when I go back to do the rest of the vox. Thanks again.

This sounds excellent! I like the drums, but think it needs more cowbell -- lol --

Cool lyrics, and I like the guitar playing a lot! The mix sounds excellent! Your vocals sound strong and really carry this tune!

Great job, man! :)

Nice job Chris. Good straight writing, and a nice full sound. Others can offer better mix advice for this genre, but it sounds good to me.

I listened to this the other night...but didn't respond. ...sorry:(
I really liked your vocals a lot..and the gtr fit in with them great. Good use of both. I give you a dbl thumbs up on this one. A CD of this stuff would be VERY NICE. (I do hear the "purple rain" reference....but that was a kick but song too...eh?). I don't have any suggestions on changes, because the song is so strong. Great job.

must have listened about 10 times....really nice.....let me know when the CD is available......

HOLY MOTIVATION, BATMAN

Hey guys...I REALLY appreciate your taking the time to listen.

Boydrj, Sluice - I'm torturing the poor folks around here with like, a song every 2 days...that'll end soon, I PROMISE, and your ears are helping bring this to an end sooner, rather than later. Thank you.

Kramer - check your PM's .... thanx

Mixmkr - I'm thanking you individually for making me use a keyboard. I've got a whole new world in front of me.

Gidge - wow... Thanks a kabillion for the confidence boost. I'll be THRILLED to send a free CD of my homemade hillbilly music to anybody on this board who wants one...but the people who say NICE things also get the liner notes :D (You'll get 'em).

I'm almost done with some suggested EQ tweaks across most of the tracks, and I'll finish up the background vox tonight and pretty much put this one to bed for awhile.

GOOD NEWS - THERE ARE ONLY 2 MORE SONGS FOR YA'LL TO LISTEN TO, and I won't be able to finish either one for another week at least. There's no way I could do this without ya'll.

Be good,
-chris

I listened to your 2nd version now...

Listening and typing...the intro gtr is a tad 'tinny'...but that's kinda ok...smacks you in the face. Your vocals are topper..and I like your keys;)

Long live delays, reverbs...and killer vocals!!

Your guitar playing accomplishes a riffing kind of part...but fills in just right with the "right" kind of 'purple rain' playing with a guitar part that seems spontaneous, but then again sounds thought out.

Now, I guess I need to see the three chicks, weaving, swaying, and singing in time in the background...just loud enough to add their part.

The nice long fade puts you on my Christmas card list....waaaaaay to go! I think that works SOOOO much better. Watch the VERY ending...kinda cuts off a little quick...if you can fade to black just a little more perfectly, you'd have it.
I'll say it again...great song.... and even kinda an instance where every part is linear, from beginning to end...but it works

GREAT!!

Are you familiar with Steve Earle?? Because this reminds me of some of his stuff (which I LOVE) I love this stuff...your stuff never ceases to amaze me!!! Oh, yeah, I play a Squire Strat too!!! Just put a Seymour Duncan in that sucker and it rips!!!

Top notch...play it again, but this time...
TURN IT UP!!!

Hey Chris,

I felt compelled to step in and add my compliments on the song and recording to the list of admiring forum mates.

The lyrics are very strong and you support them well in all aspects.

Great song!!!

Theron.

Can I really get a CD of your stuff??!!??

Fade away...

Mixmkr - Man, I'm floored...and relieved. The fade made it go from 4:33 to over 5 minutes...but it's not like I'm fighting to get on the radio anyway. :D Again, thanks.

Mr. Elvis - Friend, I like Steve Earle a lot. Now THERE'S an NPR artist. He's also on my A-List for pumping out so much great material despite being TOTALLY smacked up for years...man, I shudder to think what he COULD have done if he'd gotten sober about a decade earlier. If you like Steve, you REALLY NEED to listen to a guy named Chris Knight, from Dallas. He's not famous, but GOD he should be. You can get free MP3's all over the net of his stuff, he's just not famous. I'm taking time to write this because I 100% guarantee you'd dig him a lot. He's probably my biggest songwriting hero of the past 5 years, and the song "It Ain't Easy Bein' Me" is, in my opinion, the best example of perfect songwriting I've ever heard. Very cool stuff.

Theron - First, thanks. I want the next one to be better...always. Second, you should listen to Chris Knight too...he's not really country...not really rock...I think from what I've gathered from your posts and musical background and attention to lyrics, you'd dig him a lot. I appreciate your taking the time to drop in.

LAST - YES, I WILL GLEEFULLY SEND OUT COMPLIMENTARY CD's TO ANYBODY WHO WANTS ONE (if I ever quit checking this board long enough to finish the damned thing :D ). Hell yes, it feels good to think that somebody might actually WANT one. In fact, if I send out CD's just to the people who responded to this thread, I think it'd probably triple the amount I unloaded with the last "indie" release of mine. Oh yeah, WALDO's getting one whether he wants it or not. When I'm done, I'll ask for addresses.

Okay...we're gonna' let this thread die right...NOW!

If you post after this, please know that I'll certainly watch it, and I'll thank you elsewhere...I think I've hogged more than enough space over the past few weeks to annoy even the nicest of you folks...(and we've still got 2 more to go).

-chris

Thanks I am definately gonna have to check him out. I met Steve Earle once in the airport here in San Antonio back in '89. I was a huge fan of his and had just seen his show here in SA about a week before. I was waiting for a friend to arrive and it just so happened that standing right next to me was Steve Earle. We stood around talking for about 20 minutes and he was great, this was before he went to prison and stuff. He was telling me he was about to go on tour with Bob Dylan and Tom Petty or something like that from what I remember...He was a really nice guy.

Hi Chris

I'm late to the party - hope everyone hasn't gone home!

First - superb singing. You really have an excellent voice, and the screaming bit is very cool - nice and raw, but controlled just enough, and still bang-on for pitch. How do you do that?

Songwriting - good, but not my favourite of yours.

I think maybe the chorus needs a bit of a lift - maybe even just some harmonies. You could also play about with bringing the instrumentation down a bit during the verses, to really give the chorus an extra zing when it comes in.

The verse chords sound reminiscent of "Whiter Shade of Pale", but the melody is totally different.

Some nice lines - the burning bridges bit is my fave.

The mix sounds a wee bit "left-sided" to me. I'd swap the two hard-panned guitars - the one that's currently on the left has a bit more edge than the one on the right, and clashes a bit with the hihat. Swap the guitars, and I think it would balance things out nicely.

The steel/slide guitar is a bit piercing - can you tone it down a bit? (Can you spot the irony in me saying your guitar is too harsh? :) )

Bass sounds good - nice and simple, but solid.

The electric guitar could probably live a tiny bit further out to the right, just to give it a bit of room.

The mix as a whole is just slightly too "up front" to my ears - a gentle cut (3db, Q=0.45) around 2.9k makes a big difference, without damaging the overall sound. See what you think.

Really good sound, top-notch vocal, but it doesn't hit me the same as your previous ones. Nice axe-hero stuff, though! ;)

Keep up the good work

Alastair

YEAH BABY YEAH!!! Most excellent. I never heard the version that most everyone else commented on, but the current version is awesome. The guitar playing was top notch. Got me the willies in a few spots... The only comments/suggestions I have are more from a producer point of view than a sonic one... To me, the mood, rhythem, setting, whatever... made me want to hear the production more raw. I was wanting to hear less reverb and more more lead guitar up front. Something akin to SRV's Texas Flood... Just me though. It still kicked ass.

Hey Chris,
Im a little late on this one, .....sorry. Im listening to the current version (#2, i believe). Very very strong vocs. I dont know what the levels sounded like on the original post, but these sound great....... with a voice like that, its gotta be heard:cool: ....Someone mentioned the T. Petty reference...... I'll second that....and thats a good thing. The recording is nice too. If I had to put up a bitch about something, it would be the lead guits. ....a little too busy in some parts for me, but thats just my very humble opinion. The rhythm is solid, and the drums youre downplaying dont sound bad at all. They leave space for the songs highlights..... those tasty vocs.:D

Nice work man, G

Classic-Rock feel/arrangement.....my people!!

I have no complaints. Well balanced. I can hear all the instruments and vocals in my shitty 12 buck computer speakers. That's a good test.

Nice lead guitar playing, and THE RIGHT organ patch. My only nudge would be to take a little, just a little of the slap on the delay off the lead guitar. You're covering up some good playing I think by making the delay too busy. Nice vocals and a good level of reverb/delay there.
