Quick question: Will an SM58 be a good microphone to use on hihats? Should I take the windscreen off?

thanks,
Mike

We use an Audix D4 on the snare, and it picks up the hi-hats just fine. 'Course, there's no seperation, just a fleeting hope that snare and hi-hat are "mixed" right.

The 58 MIGHT be a good mic for that application. I wouldn't worry about taking the ball off though.

Try to find a used Tascam PE-125. A most excellent, warm sounding hi-hat mic I have found. I prefer it even to the AT 4051.

Ok, thanks for the replies all. The mics I'm using right now....Beta 57 on kick, akg d770s on toms, sm-57 on snare, c1000s as an overhead. I have used other vocal mikes on the hihats (pretty cheesy), and they sounded terrible. I'm not looking for overly professional hihat results, just something that won't have harsh mids or high overtones (like I had with the previous mic used). Thanks for the help.

Mike
