I'm not married to the original because I heard it as a cover before I ever heard the original. I'd say you did an awesome job. I wouldn't have even noticed fake drums until someone pointed it out. Everything fits together quite nicely.

Wow, great job, especially with the drum sound. Very '70s ish. Also a good job on the vox. Another thing I like about this mix is how it has a very warm, fat, analog sound. Great job capturing the attitude of the original song. The only criticism I can offer is that the keyboard solo has a piercing quality at certain notes, although I don't know if that is on purpose or not.

Otherwise, great job!
 
Pretty cool, but the drums seem kinda buried. They seem to have power and energy, but seem mixed low.

The organs don't have enough crunch, too clean.

Vocals and guitars rock!

the drums are midi based, triggering actual samples, so they're not 'fake' per se, but i know what you mean.
the ezdrummer stuff sounds really good, and is easy to program.
well, this particular tune, had a LOT of custom tweaks to it. nothing canned in this programming, nothing was quantized, it was basically 'played' in the midi realm, via keyboard input, and then hand crafted to match the human part of it...

the warmness, has a lot to do with the source sounds, but also in the mixing..
i spent a lot of time taking as much 'harsh' out of it, to make it sound smoother..... a lot of high end rolloff, and i guess the keyboard pierce that remains, is probalby from running it thru the boogex amp VST...
i needed high end for clarity, but then on the solo, it pushes too much..
i could automate an EQ envelope across the solo only, but man, i'm just too lazy.

actually, if you compare this to the original, the drums are MUCH louder in this one.
it's just a subjective judgement call, is all.

the keys were even CLEANER, before i ran it thru the guitar amp sim!

they were squeeky clean, then...
i just didn't want to overdo it, and we weren't trying to recreate the original mix exactly.

they had a pretty brutal style, for classic rock, wasn't everybody's cup of tea.


for me, it's a cool engineering lesson.

and honestly, i could polish this turd until it glows gold, and it still wont touch the original, in terms of sounds, and balance, and performances, all that.

but it was still fun to do.

Oh, trust me, man, their being "too brutal" is hardly the problem here. ;) I just never really was a huge fan of Deep Purple. It doesn't take away from the fact you did a stellar job on this cover.
 
Damn, this is awesome. I didn't realize the drums were sequenced until I read it. What sequencer did you use? I am stuck with redrum, so I can't really figure out how to make it groove the way I want.

Anyway, nice work, everything sounds really cool!

gotcha...
i just meant, folks that liked certain kinds of rock from that era, might have gone after sabbath, or MC5, or even aerosmith, versus purple, there was so much stuff out then, it's a wide playing field....

xeno did the drums.
he programmed them from scratch, i guess inputting from his keyboard, triggering EZDrummer, and then going back and hand tweaking the input data.

well, not exactly true, i did a licensed cover of 'BAD MOON RISING' for my debut album with Planet Records, "Trouble".
then this one.
but i just write original material, i worked in cover bands full time, for 5 years on the road, so i'm pretty much done with covers!

You are singing it in one line! At the end of this line, you should go little bit lower in tunes. That's just my opinion!
But this is just one little thing you do wrong in my ears!
