Just wondering if anyone knew anything about or had any experience with these new "higher end" MXL microphones. They look cool, but so do a lot of other Chinese crap off of EBay... To me MXL has always been a company to turn to for a mic if you couldn't afford much else. I've owned a few MXLs in the past and for the price, they weren't horrible. But some of these new mics have some considerably higher price tags than their predecessors...

I heard the MXL V89 at AES this year and can tell you I was blown away. The prototype was the best sounding mic I have heard under $1000 and at $399 it's a steal. I own the NTK, SM57, Sterling VT79, Neumann TLM 103, AT4050 & 4033. What I heard on the showroom floor was dramatically beyond the sound of any of these mics.

That said, if production is not up to the prototype then that would be a disappointment. I am going to be getting one of these shortly and will report back.

Also wanted to add that I thought it sounded better than the Genesis side by side.

My main vocal mic is an NTK. Please let us know what you think of the V89.

"unbelievably natural"

"stunning realism"

"premium materials"

and last but certainly not least.....

"made in China"

all that in the same breath? for the unbelievably stunning low premium price of under $400 dollars?

Why is my "exaggeration detector" red-lining? :D

This is why we hold back till some braver soul buys one and reports back. LOL
I saw the V89 at NAMM, but didn't get a chance to hear it. Their new models look very nice. I can vouch for the Genesis being a very useful mic.

Hey Harvey. Have you used an NTK? Could you comment on the differences, (sound-wise) between the NTK and the Genesis? Thanks. Hope this is not hijacking the thread.

The only Rode I've ever heard is the NT1.

Tempting...

Would like to read some reviews/hear some clips... :)
