high quality monitors on a low budget?

whos good to go with ? if u cant afford something like the Mackie HR's something for about half that but still sounds very good.

I seem to remeber a thread here a while back that involved Old stereo speakers, an EQ, an old turn table, some string, a cieling fan, and a whole bunch of name calling and profanity. I think it was infact the only time I used the phrase "Goat Felcher" on this board, maybe do a search on that.
 
Yorkville YSM1p's - biamped active monitors, 40-20,000Hz+/-3dB, bass/treble response tailoring switches for compensation for speaker placement. Probably cost around half the cost of the Mackies. Won't go as loud as the Mackies, not quite as good as the mackies but kicked everything else I tried out of the park sonic detail wise. Seem to be nice and uncoloured-sounding, great bass extension too for the price/size.

Quite a few people here (including me) like'em a lot.
Otherwise, Behringer Truths (which I haven't had a chance to try) are popular with some and hated by others.

If you already have a reasonable quality stereo amp, a soldering iron, and a screw driver, one of these kits would be a good alternative:

Focal 7KT ($660/pr) http://www.speakercity.com/kits.shtml

Epoch 2 ($776/pr) http://www.zalytron.com/ (under premium kits)

All of these speakers use much higher quality, higher linearity drivers than the Mackies and will yield far more detail across their frequency range - despite the fact that they are passive. The Mackies do have more bass extension. But, in order to make a 6" or 8" speaker go as low as they do, accuracy and transient response MUST be sacrificed. This is why the Mackie bass sounds sloppy and exaggerated.

Kits are a great way to spend less and get more!

If you have a decent stereo amp you could also get away with Yorkville's unpowered monitors, I paid $86 each. They also have that model with a shielding for use near a computer monitor. I think the models # are YSM1 and YSM1i for the shielded one.

I got them about four or five months or so ago.

I was doing my live recording in a different area of the house and was carrying them back and fourth for a while. I liked them so much that I ended getting a second pair (the shielded ones) and left them in the other room where I do a lot of my direct recording.

I got them at U-Crest music in Cheektowaga, New York.

what about the new Maudio SP-8Xs? I have heard alot about the older version, but for the money, they look like a good buy in that price range. They are active so that'll cut out the need for a separate power amp. Also, the behringer truths have gotten good reviews, even though it's behringer, i think they might have actually made a decent piece of equipment along with their compressors.

After a long tiring search of the pawn shops in KC, I finally found a pair of yamaha NS10s for only $75. they thought they were bookshelf speakers.

I know right now where can get some tannoy 600 for $120 a pair, and I havent even started haggleing yet. Anybody use those are they any good, they have 2 pairs and they think they are surround speakers.

Make sure they arent blown and the tweets are ok... you can get screwed that way. Either one is a good deal, and I want the Tannoys from you rather badly at that price.

Those Yamahas are flush mounted in the wall over my desk, you cant have them. but the Tannoys are still availible but I havent tested them yet. My thinking was that I could Jew them down a little and get both pairs, and auction off the second pair on Ebay for what I paid for both the pairs.
 
So you wont hook a fellow homereccer up, eh? Auction one pair for $225 and sell me the other for your cost, plus shipping, and make yourself $100 while helping someone else out. :)

I'm using the M Audio SP5B's, and they're working quite well for me. I'm told the SP8B's can be had for about $300, but I'm damned if I can find out where.-Richie
