pacifica!!! germanium!
Definitely. I've seen a lot of people selling those two units on Gearslutz lately, which makes me wonder if the initial buzz just wore off on them. What I've read about them (no first hand experience with either), is that they are both very charactered/colored, which is both good and bad. Supposedly the Pacifica is an awesome all around pre (seen them used from $1400+) and the Germanium is especially great for electric guitar (new or used they are around $1000-$1100 plus a power supply for around $100).

If you purchase a chassis kit , power supply and a preamp kit all at once from seventh circle you get the power supply for free. 625 for all three. the N72 sounds great. I compared it to the 1272's we have at work and I ( and 5 other engineers ) all believe it is close enough. And the great thing about it is that the chassis and power supply will supply 8 pre's total so you still have 7 empty slots with which you can fill with an assortment of the seventh circle stuff. they have the a12 ( api clone) the j99 which if you shell out the extra $$ and get some john hardy 990c 's for it ,I hear sound fantastic and the c84 ( i think going from memory) which have been compared to the millenia stuff. All in all I think they are quality products and alot of fun to put together. They aren't that difficult to assemble. That would leave you with around 1300 left ( I assume based on what i have read in this thread) that you are looking for a higher end LDC for Vocals? with 1300 you could get into some of the soundelux line maybe a u195 or a lawson l47fet ( neumann 47 fet knockoff I hear good stuff about). Just some ideas

Just my 2¢

First off, I hate to be negative ... but 2 grand probably isn't going to get you in to the stuff people are going to hate you for using.

It could get you some nice stuff though, for sure.

But I'm going to have to agree with Cannabis on this one. You're not going to get where you want to go by simply saying to yourself: "I want better stuff, and I can spend X amount" and then just going out and finding something that will fit that budget range and qualify as higher end.

This can't be looked at as a "practical" purchase. You need to buy something you lust after. It has to be the Red Rider BB gun in the Christmas Story movie. Otherwise, it's no fun. And that's the whole point of it.

Definitely, but everything is relative. 2 grand on a mic and pre is probably more than many/most people have in their entire setup-- instruments included. Those people will probably at least envy you. :)
I'd say it's probably similar to the richest 1% pattern in terms of wealth/income.

Agree 100%, except to say that it could be practical if you get something that's high quality that you're going to use for years to come.

What are you wanting to do?

until you answer this you may as well stick it in the bank.

i'm never envious of people who have nice gear and don't know what to use it on. it always gives me a good chuckle. more and more these days you see it. folks with piles and piles of gear...and they've been working on their band's cd for 3 or 4 years...and damn if they just had that UA mic pre it would sound better.

figure out what you are going to do...then the money will spend itself...trust me.

get that room treated first duderoni

i agree. if your room, instruments, and playing technique sound crappy, a $2000 mic preamp will only allow you to hear just how crappy everything really is.

yeah, but that really crappy would sound really good! isn't that what it's all about? :D :p

cheers,
wade

PS--Chessrock, you'll shoot your eye out!

without getting into the whole argument of whether the money will be well spent or not, and what you're trying to do with it the stuff, and blah blah blah...

i would personally suggest an AKG C414 paired with the vintech pres

assuming the vintech is pretty close to the original neve, this will give you a combination that will not only yield high-end results within your price range, but also allows for some versatility - it seems pretty tough to find something that the 414 sucks on, and the same goes for the neve pres

Red Ryder BB guns go for a whole lot less than $2000. A better BB gun would be at the $400-500 pricerange. I prefer RWS and Beeman myself, while others prefer the top German target variety costing $1000 up.

Choice in pellets vary. also, depending on how your rifle "likes" them. Try different types (buy the sample tins) to determine most accurate and repeatable pellets. You want to be able to hit that pre-amp from 100' accurately. You should have known that Red Ryder BB guns are smooth bore and are very inaccurate in both aiming and velocity.

I hear the Chinese copies are just as good :D
sorry... :o

hey hey hey! off topic!

i understand you all. i did some treatment and i'm pretty satisfied with that. a little more couldnt hurt a bit ;)

i did think it over a bit, and maybe the grace with a blue would be nice for me.

by envy me, i was joking a bit :)

honestly, if anything, expensive gear will give me some additional confidence and pride in what i'm doing. besides, this whole thing is just for me anyway.

so maybe the grace, a nice mic, maybe around $1200 ish for the two, and a new acoustic guitar or something real purdy!

I've sort of been following this, but my personal suggestion (what I did my self) is the hamptone preamp and the P12 mic from Peluso. It's a great combo. While it won't be right on everything, niether will the 2247 LE, it sounds good on everything great on somethings. I can send some clips if need be, but I'll PM them as they are for a record I'm working on.

The best thing you can do, if you haven't already, is figure out how to get the rooms you record and mix in to sound good.

I've spent more than 2k on that... and I've got a ways to go yet.

Having a nice pre and mics helped me hear how bad my room sounds though.

thanks guys.

thats a scary thought.. expensive gear only sounding worse ...

i definitley had a change of heart, and i will probably go with a grace and a baby bottle, or/and SM7. more acoustic work won't hurt, and a new acoustic guitar would be splendid.

thats probably still under my 2k plan. now its time to prowl free ad, craigslist and the bay.

my next gear purchases are definitely going to be a baby bottle and either a sm7 or re20 for mics

and then probably an osa kit
