High end mixer

I am going to buy a nice mixer, maybe in the 1000 to 2000 dollar area. I was looking at some soundcraft mixers and some heath and allen mixers. I need about 16 channels. Do you guys have any reccomendations for a sick mixer in this price range? Please help.
 
Allen Heath MIX Wiz. You really aren't going to find a "sick" mixer in that price range. When you come back with a budget in the $100,000 to $800,000 range, then I can help you find a "sick" mixer. Unitl then though, that little Allen Heath should treat you right, and come in under budget;)
 
The Soundcraft M- series are solidly within your price range and you'd be foolish not to at least give them a listen.

Also if you can stretch your budget a little (to $2500 maybe) and you don't mind buying used, I've seen Soundcaft Ghosts in that range on ebay. They're as close to sick as you're going to get without spending a ton of money.
 
I'll second the Soundcraft M-Series. Then I'd look at a used Soundcraft Ghost.
 
Great mixers?

You might consider a used RAMSA or Peavey AMR (The only ones they've made that I don't consider firewood :cool: it'll probably set you back about $1500. I used to have an A&H 16x4- a bit noisy but sounded pretty good

I always looked for maximum effects send/return flexibility and low noise. AMR's were made with discreet channel circuitry- unlike shitty Alesis one piece epoxy boards. If you had a repair on one channel, it didn't knock out your entire board. I also agree that Soundcraft's are pretty good for the money...

BTW, are you looking at analog or digital?

Yoiks! I don't know where you are but I bet that mixer is in the UK, as the price is in GBP. Shipping to the US will be considerable, I imagine.

If you can - save your money.

I was going to buy a new mixer, and then one of my friends told me about the Midas Venice 320 that he saw. It is a 24x that sells for about $5,000 and has the same preamps that they use on their top of the line mixers. If you need 16 channels, then you really need to look at 24, because you're going to find yourself running out of channels quickly! Always try to have more than you actually need just in case....because the odds are that you will need them at some point.

Granted, this is a "Live" mixer, but it will kick the heck out of most mixers in this price range.

Others I would look at are the Ghost mixers (also a live mixer but a lot of studios use them)

and check out the Crest Mixers as well.

Actually, the Ghost is a studio console, but a few people use them live.

As for the Midas, I am a huge Midas fan and own a couple of Midas consoles. The Venice does NOT have the same preamp as the XL4. It is however very similar, as are the sonic properties as well. When you use it, you still know you are using a Midas. In fact, Midas says that the new preamp (Venice, Verona, Sienna) may even be a little nicer than that of the Heritage and XL4. Of course all of this is subjective. Due to new design techniques and stuff they have obviously found a way to tighten up the whole package a bit. Their bench tests may show better results, but in my opinion thats got nothing to do with whether or not it sounds better.

Bottom line, if you want to buy a new console for the studio for $5k or less.....

For feature set.....Ghost
For pure sound quality....Midas
 
Go Ghost

I just got a Ghost, and for the money, it is a very good board. Nice FAT, round sound. It also has alot of good routing options. If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive mixer, check this one out.
