High End Mics + Poor Acoustics

Basically I want to know of anyone's experience/knowledge of using high end mics in an untreated room.

Given the basic fact that audio recording is so front loaded and a decent recording space is essential to a quality recording, I would urge the opposite priority: quality instruments, high end acoustics and low cost mikes, if necessary. With high quality recording spaces, even low-cost, highly accurate omni mikes easily and reliably produce authentic and useable sounds that are easy to mix, assuming the instruments sound good. Honestly, for me, recording is easy now. It's creating the music that's really hard!

The ASC Studio Trap is an incredibly elegant (but expensive) tool for creating a high quality, controlled and reproducible recording subspace as well as a high quality, controlled and reproducible mixing subspace. I use mine to do both in the same room, and they are easily portable for use in other studios and on location recordings when I can get access to a better sounding room, such as a church sanctuary. They're not cheap, but they really take care of the acoustical issues.

Here are a few links for those who wish to know more:

You may want to scroll down to the bottom of this page and download the application pdf file for some helpful illustrations and examples.

The usual disclaimer: I have no financial interest, just want to share helpful information on something that really works well.

Cheers,

Otto

I said I'd post some recordings and I'm finally doing it.

There are three rough mixes from the same clip - full mix, drums clean and then the drum mix.

I apologise for the vocal performance - not at his best that day.
