Hi. I was wondering if anybody could point me in the direction of some info on the layout and workings of some high end/large format consoles. I.E. routing, layout, signal path, and general what-does-what of consoles such as Neve, SSL, etc. I'm not talking about, "well, the eq is for shaping the sound by...." kind of info, more like the difference between the big and small faders, the master section, and section by section info on the channel strips of specific consoles. I'm mainly looking for info on the Neve 8108, and 88R, SSL 4000G+, and 9000J. Is there such a thing as a users manual for these consoles? Or is it more like, "well if you don't know, then I won't tell you." Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I think you would have to check out a book to learn about one of those consoles. They have so much going on it can't possibly contained in under 200 pages...

Either that or be more specfic in your line of questioning.

Well, to be a bit more specific, I'm looking for info on the Neve 8108. I've worked on some great consloes, but nothing quite as complicated as a Neve or an SSL. I've got a freind who's an assistant (gopher) at a studio w/ an 8108 and he says he can get me in there during off times, but I'd be in there alone and would like to learn as much about this console before going in there so I'm not wasting TOO much time trying to figure things out. I was told the routing is similar to most Neves and SSLs, but that doesn't do me much good. I'm very familiar w/ bussing, patching, etc. but what about the different faders on each channel and in/output routing, etc. (I don't even wanna get into the automation, yet) Are the smaller faders a "mix B" of sorts? Do you just select the mix B monitor on the master section to hear the mix on those faders? (I'm thinking along the lines of the mix B on the Mackie 8 bus) I know a lot has to be learned from hands on, but since I won't have anyone in there to answer my questions and point me in the right direction, I was hoping there was some info I could find online or at a bookstore. Is there such a thing as a Users Manual (or something similar) for this console? I understand it's a lot of info to cover, but my searches have found nothing so far. So if someone could help me and point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

The site of the dutch firm D&R has all its manuals downloadable on the site. From pro to very very pro. If you spit through these you'll know a lot more of the world of heavy consoles (escpecially the digital ones)
