Hi, I joined this forum because I love recording and I'm in the process of putting together a small studio setup. I bought a Tascam 244 4-track from ebay needing belts and some work for 40 dollars, and now that the belts have been installed I'm a little bit stuck. I haven't used it except for once after the belts were installed and it doesn't seem to record or play anything. It will move the tape but it tends to damage the tape when it plays, and makes a screeching noise when it's playing. I haven't been able to record or play anything with it.

The ebay site said I might need idler tires, anyone else have any insight?

I posted this in the newbie forum because I didn't know where this would be on topic.

Also I'm a van of vintage equipment which is why I'm fixing the 244. Right now my setup includes a laptop, tascam monitors, a small yamaha mixer, and an SM57. I play guitar and bass and do vocals. I'm currently fixing up an electric drum kit too. I love music and I'm committed to turning the musical visions in my head into reality.

respect~

When was the last time the heads were cleaned? You'll want to clean the capstan and pinch roller too. Use a rubber cleaner for the roller, not the same alcohol-based cleaner that you use for the heads.
