i've got 2 pairs of (mid-80s given the logos) 14in New Beats and they sound completely different from each other.

That answered my next question.

Paiste 2002 series or Signature series Sound Edge Hi-Hats. The only pairs really worth owning. No offense to the Zildjian/Sabian fans here of course :D

I guess it's true that hats are very much a matter of personal preference. I tried both of those last weekend. The 2002 sounded... odd. I couldn't think of a way to describe the strange overtones, so I just wrote down "odd". The Sound Edge sounded excessively bright. I suspect it might sound good in a 15" or so.

The nicest sound I found was the Paiste Alpha, though that still didn't quite have the right tone. Close, though.

That said, I didn't like any of the Zildjian or Sabian hats, either. :) The Zildjian sounded better than the Sabian, IMHO, but still a bit too dark. The Sabians, by contrast, were way too dark.

Maybe I'm just too picky.

Definitely the 15". And yeah the newly redesigned Alpha's are nice (although I think the hats are the week part of the series). I just ordered the 22" Metal Ride :D

I second the quick beats. I got them over a year ago and I love them. Because of the holes on the bottom they have a very clean, crisp, tight sound when played closed, and when open they sound very similar to new beats, which I love. Click on music in my sig and listen to NewMicPlacement. I used Quick Beats in that track and there's no eq on them so you can hear how they sound.
