Hi Hat Questions...

Couple of things.

Firstly, should my top and bottom hats be equidistant from one-another the whole way around? There seems to be a bit of a tilt in my hat.

Secondly - and maybe this is a related issue - but could someone explain why, at the base of my clutch, there is metal rectangle that goes off at an angle? It seems to be adjustable and looks like it would take some kind of bolt (sorry if I'm not explaining so well).

Finally, what can I adjust - if anything - to change the tension required to close the top hat and change how fast it opens when I lift my foot.

1) Usually there's a small adjustment for the bottom hat to alter the tilt. It's under the bottom felt. A little screw. A little tilt on the bottom hat can make it sizzle when played open or slightly open, and it helps with the chick sound when using the foot pedal. It's a personal preference thing. No hard fast rules on it. I personally pay no attention to it.

2) I'm not sure exactly what you're saying there, but some clutches have a screw that acts like a lock to keep the bottom of the clutch adjuster from coming loose while you're playing.

3) Not all hat stands have that kind of adjustment. The most basic models don't. The more intermediate and pro stands do. Post a pic of your stand.
 
Is it a Tama HH stand? If so, the bracket is for attatching a slave pedal from a Tama double bass pedal.
 
Also, some drummers like to be able to trigger a "swish" on the HH with a glancing foot stroke - think jazz. Adjusting the angle at which the hats lay facilitates that technique.

So that's a shot of the underside of my hat top. That little metal rectangle can tilt at a 45 degree angle, but when I thread the cymbal it sits flush with the rest of the clutch.

Sorry, I know this probably seems like a really anal question.
 
Lol. I don't think I've seen one like that. Still, doesn't matter. If it works as a clutch, then it's good. Or you can just buy another if it bugs you. They're cheap.
