Hi guys can you help me with this mix?

My speakers are not particularly fancy. I thought the distorted guitar on the left was competing with the vocal, making it difficult to hear the lyric. To be honest, that guitar is a bit annoying. It just drones on, not doing anything particularly musical or interested but making itself the center of attention at the expense of everything else in your mix. If it were my song, I turn it (way) down and EQ to create some air around the vocals. Your singer sounds like Lou Reed.

My speakers are great, tailored in fact to my wonderful room. So I turned it way up for this one. Kicked in the auxiliary speaker, even. Wanted to hear the vocal more distinctly. It's not the level, it's something else.

"I hate to be the best." Okay, got it on the third listen. I should have caught it on the second listen. My fault, probably.

Its funny, I think that the guitars added personality to the mix. It reminds me a lot of Sonic Youth's stuff.

I loved the song and the mix! To me its a great job and I think I need to hear more "imperfect" mixes like these. I said imperfect because it sounds not like modern rock...in fact it sounds way better than that.

I feel like the bass needs to come up, the snares down, and that bratty guitar should be tamed, it's a little out of control and not playing notes in scale. A more mellow tone might work but if it's gonna scream I'd rather it be musical. Like cmolena I thought of sonic youth too. Pretty cool.

thanks everyone i will turn down the brat guitar and see how that goes. thanks for liking it cmolena it's "outsider art" or whatever you want to call it i dunno i'm just weird and can't make radio music so i don't. to me the guitar sounds musical but the guy said it isn't at all and not even playing the right notes and i'm so bad that i'm sonic youth. i listened to your songs and liked them, cmolena, and didn't think the drums sounded like midi.

the hard part is fitting in that guitar though i need it or the mix loses all energy but it's hard to fit in at the right level. i hope someone else with fancy speakers can give me more information mixing in headphones stinks

Sorry I wasn't trying to be a dick, bratty was just the best adjective I could come up with. For what it's worth I got a kick out of data entry and depressed so I dig your aesthetic (and sonic youth is legendary man!) It's just the guitar kinda spoils the song for me because it's so sour. Nothing wrong with that if you're going for a sour sound, it's just kinda our duty to point out anything that a poster may not notice because they're so close to the song. That's how I see it anyway.

i like this song, your voice, and the phrasing. nice job. i'm not sure about the guitar on the left yet. i get what people are saying...but it's also part of the style and uniqueness to the track. i do agree that sometimes the "wrong" notes are being played. if you're going to do that, make sure people can understand you're intentionally doing it and not just messing up. Yeah I say it's a mix between S.Y. Weezer, and Hayden (i doubt anyone remembers Hayden, from like 1995).

I would work on the guitars a bit, and there's a guitar that came in at the very end that was apparently buried under the other guitars - i would have liked to hear that one more too.

please keep doing what you are doing - i like your stuff, even the acoustic "jam". creative, refreshing, and different. cool stuff dude

thanks andru that is real nice. i get what people are saying too the guitar is kind of shrill i turned it down a lot and used eq but i guess i need to do more. the problem is the original recording was bad and i don't have the amp anymore so i can't redo it so i just gotta make do with this one i'll just turn it down and then post that mix. i remember hayden he had that song about liking a girl who was 16 that was really good and he had other good songs. he was like pedro the lion and beck kind of and maybe a little like smog. my favorite bands are dinosaur jr and pavement i don't really like sonic youth at all but i do like lou reed so that is nice.

it's okay easlern you are right i need to tame the guitar. i'm glad you liked i'm depressed nobody liked that one. i kind of stink but don't care too much except when it gets in the way of getting a song down.

Yeah that song is great, I only wish it were longer.

Don't be hard on yourself man the guitar stuff gets better on its own. Really it's a small thing in the grand scheme anyway because you wrote arranged and recorded a whole song and all that other stuff is already in good shape. What we're really saying is this is 95% there, here's the 5% we think will gold plate it. It's easy to lose perspective in workshops like this I think.

thanks for putting it into perspective easlern. i wasn't too depressed about it other than the usual depression and terror from sharing something on the scary internet, but it helps to put it in perspective.

i hope i can make comments to help other people but i don't know a whole lot. i feel greedy just getting help though

Agree with the guys -- turn down that lead guitar and the mix should be good. That's a great indie-style original in the same vein as Pavement -- same vocal delivery. I'm a fan.
