Hey there everyone,

I'm using Cubase SX 2.2 to mix some songs for my band and the tracks were ok for a while but when I opened them up earlier some vox and guitar tracks had developed seemingly random popping and crackling sounds. The pops are actually visable on the wavs so I don't think it's a playback issue with cubase itself and I'm guessing the only fix is to re-import the original files and start mixing from scratch but I'd still apprriciate it if anyone has a clue what could have caused this so I know what to avoid in future.
I'm pretty new to home recording and my PC isn't really rigged out for it (on bord sound etc..) This problem seems odd though, has anyone had anything like this happen before?

do you have a networking card in a pci slot ?
if you do - turn it off prior to recording.
also make sure dma is enabled on hard drives.
dont use on board sound.
list whats in your pci slots.

???????

What does the network card have to do with anything? I've been using a DAW for years with networking fully enabled.......

You can't expect efficiency with on board sound cards. You need an audio card like "M AUDIO DELTA" that you can pick up at Long & McQuaid
or any other music store. $200.00 Canadian funds. This solved my crackling problem and really improved the quality of sound.

Zoom in on one of the original waves. If the the spikes aren't there, then something you've done in your mixing has created the anomalies.
If none of the original waves are clipping or contain the noises you experienced, you may need to increase your buffers to accommodate playback of the multiple tracks.

Thanks for the replies people.
OK, this is what I have -
I have no devices in any of my PCI slots, only the AGP slot is taken up.
I realise on board sound can suck but things were fine for weeks until now and I don't think it's a hardware issue. I can see the spikes on the waves where the popping occurs and the popping happens both on sound and randomly where there was silence. As far as I can tell, whatever has occurred to cause the popping has happened sometime between when I last shut down Cubase and when I re-opened it today. Is there anything that could have happened outside of the program that could have caused corruption in the Cubase project files?

Thanks again.

hi
what kind of operatin system are you using ? Windows XP ??
I have a feeling you better get a new soundcard, not a built in one....but that's just me, the unexperienced newbie
