Hi all total newbie, cashed up looking for help

Hi guys. Have just made the descision to try and go the whole home recording/producing thing. I am serious about doing this, so i am willing to spend around $5000 -$6000 on gear. I am currently still in the initial stages of working out what i need so any input would be apreciated.

I want to buy a home computer set up with an external audio interface so that internal pc static/electrical disturbance doesnt interfer with input. I have a peavy 5150 II amp i want to be able to exploit to its full potential and our drummer has an e-kit so he should be able to do direct input.

The style of music we are playing is melodic death, but i want to have a full, good production sound, not some washed out black metal crap.

I understand that vocal mics and amp mics are not one and the same, so i am willing to splash out reasonably on each since i do not want to do direct line in amp stuff.

I am also wanting to use a midi keyboard for input for various synth effects/orchestra etc..

Some friends of mine use line6 firewire for their recording, and they swear by it, i guess im looking for any advice on what mics, audio interface and midi programs i should buy

I am still in the process of learning about what it is i need, so i apologise if I sound like i asking for advice on stuff i should have researched better before asking, but i am trying to learn as much as possible as quickly as possible

You'll also probably want to start off with a Shure SM57 microphone to mic your 5150.

As for software, there is a wealth of stuff out there. Reaper is virtually free, compared to stuff like Cubase which costs around £500 (or whatever the dollar equivalent to that is)

You'll need a set of monitors. Preferably active so that you won't need an amp for them.

I'm not sure about MIDI controllers, someone else may be able to fill you in.

You'll probably have some money left over after that. It would probably be worth investing in some acoustic treatment for your room.

Wouldn't worry too much about Line 6 stuff. A lot of that is about modelling guitar sounds, and with a beautiful piece of kit like the 5150II, you won't need modelling.

As for a good full production sound, this equipment alone won't guarantee it obviously. If you are just starting out there is a lot to learn about many aspects of recording from tracking to mixing etc. You may not be happy with your sound to start with, but practice and research will set you on your way. and this is a great place to pick up knowledge.
