Ive finally gotten the walls up in my studio and i was trying to think of the best way to tame the acoustics. I followed one of your links to a way that i was really interested in. Its the one at http://www.locall.aunz.com/~johnsay/HR/index1.htm. I was wondering how well this will convert to a smaller room. My room control room is 15x10 ft. So how many side wall absorbers would i need and where would i place them exactly?

Also, would this setup work well in the recording room? Im assuming it would but i was thinking they usually tried to make recording rooms sound better than balanced. The recording room is 15x15 ft (not perfectly but really close).

Any help would be appreciated. Also if you have any other options that would also be very much appreciated.

Ive been checking around trying to find the rigid fiberglass stuff. No one around here knows what im talking about. However someone did say that hes heard of it and used it (a contractor) but he says its not available in this area (cant remember why). But some also told me that the more correct name for it is Fiberglass Duct Board. I checked on that and found some but i dunno if it is the same stuff? Also that stuff i read is really toxic.

Any ideas?

John (or anyone) this is probably the last reply to my own message to this but i need some info about a few things and i think ive got this figured out. Is there much difference between the coefficiency of rockwool and rigid fiberglass stuff. I might be able to get the rockwool stuff but not the rigid fiberglass stuff around here but i hear they are about the same.

Rigid fiberglass and rockwool should be available from an INDUSTRIAL insulation supply house.
 
You will need to call Owens Corning for a local distributor. If you search someone here has posted the # before something like 1-800-get-pink. Also do a search for the knauf stuff posted here Sometimes there are dealers that carry both. In fact I called the distributor for knauff here and they also sell 1" OC 703 with felt on it in 4'x8' sheets for 12 dollars.

Thanks a tons for the info. I will definately try that out.

Another question i have is what are the differences with the thickness? What would would i use for which frequencies? Like i said im going to be doing the slot resonators from my first post. It says to use 2". However is there maybe easier ways to do the same thing that the slot resonators would do? What are some more options?

I just purchased 3" Rockwool a couple of weeks ago. If you do a search on this forum for Rockwool, you will see that I started a thread similar to this one. You need to call Rockwool Manufacturing Company (do a search at Google and you find their website)... they are based in Alabama, and they will give you a list of local distributors.

They sell a product called SA-FIRE BOARD Sound Attenuation Insulation... look at their catalog and you can get all the info you want about it. I've actually been insulating a wall in my studio this week with this stuff, and it goes up easy, and it cuts easy as well.

I usually check this forum daily, so let me know if you have any trouble.
 
Hi darnold - sorry for not getting back - have been in Sydney for my daughters 21st :):) still got the hangover :cool: :cool:

The others have answered the fibreglass stuff for you - as far as the slots are concerned they are designed to break up the parrallel side walls as in the drawing at the bottom of the page.

Yes you can use them in the studio as they will break up the parrallels and absorb those nasty low-mids that make so many rooms sound boxey.

Good to see you here.................I was starting to think the Byronish lifestyle was getting the better of you and keeping you otherwise engaged:)


If I'd thought you were travelling North by road I would have probably tried to divert (kidnap) you off the freeway around N'cle and drag you here for my first serious attempt at tracking drums:D............Things actually didn't sound too bad but I will wait till I have the other instruments and vox tracked to hear everything in context before I get too excited.

Hey John! Thats fine for the delay in response. Your help is much appreciated no matter when i get it.

Will that setup you had at the bottom of the page basically work for any room? I dont expect it would but i guess it could. My room is not that shape, and is more of a rectangle. Im thinking i might need only 1 of the side one to do the same thing. Also, would that work in the studio room just as well? Or should i worry more about getting the acoustics sounding better than balanced?? Ive been reading about this stuff for a while but havnt quite decided which way is the best for my rooms. After i found this i thought it was perfect but i kinda wonna get the pros and cons and other details.
