Hey, im new both to recording, and this forum.

Im 13, and ive been doing a bit of recording with my bands, on a Boss BR-532(its mine), for about a year...i just got a Gemini PMX-1800 DJ Mixer(which im using as a sub-mixer for my BR-532), and im ready to get a little more serious about recording, and im thinkin of even startin a new label for local bands my age...doin demos and stuff like that....possibly eventually even makin a record for someone. Heres my equiptment(including all the instruments i have)....

1.Boss BR-532
2.Gemini PMX-1800
3.Yamaha PXR-GX76
4.Pearl Export Drumset(i play)
5.These ancient computer speakers(only the left channel has sound but im tryin to fix it)
6.Cakewalk Sonar(but its on the computer upstairs, and my other stuff is downstairs)-i sorta downloaded it off morpheus
7.Cakewalk Fruity Loops

umm other than a bunch of randomn cool percussion stuff, i think thats it.

Ok so heres the question: what do i basically need to know, i know all the terms and what does what and all, but how do i want everything to come together...how do i mix well?

holy moly!

hello. my name is will sayer but everybody here calls me zeke and i'm 13 too! what kind of music do you play? i wound like to start a rock band but i don't know anyone in my town that can play.

here's my story....

08-15-2000---

my mom and dad buy me a fostex xr-5 4 track recorder
(and a cheap radio shack mic but i does the job!)

12-25-00---

for christmas i get a 12-channel mixer,a nady scm-900 mic (great sound!) a computer and cakewalk guitar tracks recording software.

01-14-01---

my dad owns this peace of land that has a car sale place on it and they get a new building and give the old one to my dad. it's a two-room building that becomes my studio.

05-20-01---

the computer crashes taking my studio with it.

06-15-01---

i start saying for the fostex vf-16 16 track recorder.

10-15-01---

i get the 16 track recorder.

12-25-01---

for chistmas i got a dw/parcifc 5-peice cx-series drum set ( that i play) and a fender acoustic guitar (i also play)

05-05-02---

a big thing of wind come along and blow the deck and part of the roof of my studio.(don't you know that it would be raining that day!) some of my stuff got dame be not to bad. the same day i move my studio to my dad's building and i record from there.

06-10-02---

the roof is built back and so is the deck and i move back in.

and here i a'm!

tell me more about you studio. it's not often that i find someone my age that is in to this stuff!

p.s. please give me your e-mail (if you can) myne is...

rainrecords1@yahoo.com

My E-Mail is Goldenboy224@yahoo.com...umm more about my studio???Well, theres not much to tell, its currently in my basement, but im thinkin of clearin out the shed and setting up there(only problem is i have to find a place for all the stuff in the shed)...umm a few years back (maybe four) we re-painted the basement and all, i sorta setup my percussion stuff there(i got into school percussion about the same time, and i got my drumset about 2 years after that) then, i slowly got more and more music stuff, and eventually it was my jam room, then one of my bands got really serious, and we wanted to record, thats where i started my studio...after that it just grew.

damn, I feel old.
...me too... When I was 13, I was out playing baseball and chasin' girlies. Studio? What's a studio?

Good luck to both you guys though ...It's really good to see younger folk with the passion. One thing though... if you're downloading pirate software, I wouldn't advertise it. For one, it's usually full of bugs you might not find until it's too late and your screwed with it and 2) Most of us on the board buy our stuff and don't like to see people steal it. I'd stick with the copy of Home Studio you bought, or nag your parents for some better stuff :)

I am old! I don't even remember what I was doin at the age of 23, yet alone 13 !!

YEA! someone younger than me, im 14.

While im here, does anyone know of a working soundcard below or equal to $100 with 2 in's and outs atleast? (i got n-track right now) it needs to work w/ a win95/98 Im still tryin to find as many tracks as I can on a 4 track. Right now its submix, submix, final mix

I think you can get a Lexicon Core for well under 100 bucks - 4 ins (or 2 stereo ins) - it comes with a breakout box. There are a few catches though...

1) they're completely discontinuted, so no support.
2) they won't work with Win2k or XP, so no upgrading your OS
3) you have to have an Intel CPU (I'm told).
4) It's a 16 bit card - it used to be considered a half-way-decent recording card, but it's old hat - nobody uses them anymore - that's why you can find them so cheap.

To be honest, you'd be much better off saving up for a better card (Delta 44).

DAMN!!!
Im old too...
the only thing I was doing at 13 was playin with my peter

I'm 9 days older than dirt!
When I was 13, I was trying to be Eveil Kenivel on my Sting-Ray Bicycle, yep! the one with the sissy bar and the banana seat!!

hee.....heee......

hey beatmeatmachine... i almost forgot to anser your post on how to get a good mix!

one of the fist things to know is all your levels have to sound good. if your mixing a rock song you will probabey have all kinds of distortion guitars, bass, drums ect,ect and almost 90% of the time (if your a beggener) all of it will sound like a big mest and you want beable to make out the music cords and stuff. i have found that the best way to fix this is to get all of your insturments and vocals recorded and then, pull down all the faders, but leave the #1 track fader up and mess around with the volume and eq and effect and stuff until you like the sound. then do the same thing to the #2 track. do this to all your tracks until your done and when your done your song will sound great. (if the drums are to loud....turn them down. if the guitars and to loud...turn them dowm....) it's as easy as that!

and one more thing...the computer speakers that you are using....get rid of them!!!!! because cheap speakers like that will boost the bass and treble on perpose and you want be hearing what's really coming out of you recorder. therefor...when you mix a cd and play it on a system it's going to sound bad or not right...
ask some of the folks here about hooking up and running a set of "real" monitors.

good luck buddy,

zeke
