hey guys i am playing some stuff i wrote just folk music with vocals and acoustic guitar needing to be track at the same time i have read some of Harvey Gerst's postings about this and what he does to make things work out well.. what kind of mic placement and mics would you choose? i am in a smallish studio with a very slight amount of computer fan noise to have to deal with should i use a hyper cordioid mics or dynamics for vocals and something else for the guitar or should i just get a multi pattern mic and set it up one way and get a stereo set for my guitar how would you guys start out placing these
(i know you have to change things for each guitar) or so it seems....

I like a SD condensor a lof of times for acoustic guitar, maybe a pair of them. For the vocal, use the mic you think sounds best for your voice. Try the guitar mic at about the 12th fret or so, pointed slightly downward. If you add another one, try it around the bridge. Move them around a bit to find the sweet spots.

As far as the fan noise, I'd just move around untilI found the spot where it came through the mics the least. It's a paain, I know. I have been through the one room studio thing myself.

Good luck!

I like a simple vertical X-Y pair (one slightly up, on slightly down, essentially pointed around the neck joint).

Any way to just isolate the CPU at all? Piece of wood? Pillow?

yeah the X-Y seems to be the way to go for me on my guitar although with one of my guitars so far the only sound that works well is to mic above the body in the pattern by the players ear like Harvey talks about sometimes. as for my CPU its an iMac G5 so not any real great way the thing is not all that loud at least its nto as loud as my old laptop was... but any way i thought i might be able to get a hyper cardioid although i hear they do suffer some sound losses so thats a drawback right there my vocals are sort of a middle voice i am not a tenor any more so my AT4040 does not sound so great with any singing i do these days but this is getting into the mic forum stuff. my signal chain is mic(s) into FIREPOD into i Mac into Tracktion2 so pretty clean i have plenty of space three or four mics at once is easy just add the mics and stands to the studio is all. i can run 8 of them if needed. gahh really its more like JUST ADD MONEY!
