I know you haven't had your Pod XTL all that long, but there's something you should check out if you haven't done so already.
It's the "AIR" adjustment. When the Pod is running in the direct mode, the cabinet simulation models are active, along with microphone type and placement. There is also an "AIR" parameter that is adjustable.
This parameter is intended to allow you to adjust how much room ambience is audible with the selected cabinet / microphone combination. It sounds a lot like a small, live room reverb but the only adjustment is the level of ambience.
Set at 0% you get no room ambience and the sound is flat and damped. Set at 100% sounds like you are recording in a very live, untreated room, with the mic set back from the cabinet.
Try it out with a relatively clean amp model (like the Line 6 Clean or the Twin Verb) with no other effects active. You can really hear the difference as you adjust the AIR level.
