Ok, here's my first full song for you all to download and cringe at. Basically I've had everything but vocals done for a couple of months and last weekend I finally sat down and recorded some vocals. This is the first time I've done vocals and so I'm not a very confident singer... still trying to figure how best to use my voice... if I should at all. I'm probably gonna re-track at least some if not all the vocals again in the next couple of weeks now I know what I sound like so I can try and improve on what I've done... any help in this regard would very much appreciated.

Yeah Cooperman!...awesome sound and playing...vocal reminded me a bit of Metallica, with the last syllable emphasis...musta heard them more than once in the old days, eh?......I guess you're using F. Loops for drums, and as usual, you get the most out of that program than anybody I've ever heard....everything sat so well in the mix, the only thing I could think of to nit pick, is that for my taste, I'd love more verb on the drum sound, but that's just my jaded sixties/seventies ears prolly......vox is way beter than you think, too......great stuff, good work, jolly good show, etc.....gibs

COOP: Great job, man! The initial frenzy in that tune was only matched in my memory banks by Focus way back when. Your vocals need to come up at least 6 dB!!! You can sing, No need to hide behind the mix.
And all of your lead lines were mixed a little low as well. Both the drums and the rhythm guitars can give up some space in the mix without losing their outrageous impact.
Oh to be young and have all this shit.... Get it on!

gibs - do you think a little more verb on the drums would make the sound a little more 'real' - that's always been a major concern about fruity loops. Also I didn't quite get your remark about the syllable emphasis... I wasn't really aware I was emphasising anything... by the way the bass line is fruity looped as well...

doc - exactly what I was thinking last night as I was listening to it... the vocals and leads are too low... I don't know about 6dB but they'll certainly come up in the final version.

Cool Brad... if each song I write and record can result in the destruction of just one iMac, then surely the world is better place... don't you think? ;)
 
Cooperman I should have said phrasing, I guess....like when you sing "road to tragedy", tragedy becomes "tragedy-ah"...there are similar examples throughtout the song...it's a stylistic thing that reminded me of Met.....and not meant to be a bad comment......and yeah, I like verb on programmed drums, but that doesn't mean it might make 'em more real to anybody else....I still have a hell of a time getting half the sound you get from FL, but I did download some of yours and dmcsilva's samples a while back, which help me out a lot....gibs

Right On! Good job, intense song, tight rhythm guitars.

Only comments: The bass guitar needs to come up a bit . And like Doc said the vocals could be louder, maybe more reverb on the backup voc during the chorus for some different depth.

Programming those drums must of been hell. Good job.

The drums do take a LLLOOOONNNNGGGGG time to program... but it's a labor of love really... I think it's well worth the effort.

The bass is low a for reason... it's canned bass! I'm gonna re-track some of the vocal lines that I don't like this weekend and hopefully hire a bass for the weekend next weekend and record basslines for all the songs I'm working on.


PS - your CD arrived safely... I had listen through last night and I'll have another listen when I get home and post my thoughts... it sounds sweet!
 
YO Cooperman, .. that was so good it Pissed me off, Damn, the drums were A showcase of BRILLIANT fruityloops programing abilities!{ you should write a guide on advanced use,}
The mix was tight & poweful, the guitar has the perfect low end crunch, and I dig the way its layered, ... everything, the solo, the vocals,.. damn...

Thanks Shread... just in case anyone was interested the guitars were recorded with a cheap Behringer XM2000 mic with the pop filter removed, going through the pre's on my 424 MkII ...oh my god I can't believe I'm telling you all this! Basically I just cranked my Crate 120W 1x12 combo and stuck the mic 1/4 inch in front of the speaker... pretty simple really. No EQ on the guitars either... just my regular guitar sound.
 
Wow, great guitar sounds, rythmn and lead. Good guitar work also, I liked the song a lot and the ending was cool. Everything was tight playing-wise. Your singing probably isn't as bad as you think. As you said, could use a little more confidence, but that will come. You went a little flat on some parts, but the fact that you can harmonize tells me that you will probably get better as a singer. As far as going flat, it happens to me all the time, it's usually a case of resetting my monitor while I'm singing to hear myself better. I don't want to sound like I'm harping on the singing because it really wasn't bad, there's just not much else to critique in this one everything else is really hittin'. GREAT JOB....Ray J

I think the hardest thing I find about singing is I know in my head how I want to sound which unfortunately is not the way I do sound... at the moment at least. I guess I'm trying to find somewhere in the middle of the road... I think the problems of going flat are directly related to confidence more than anything... the last vocals I recorded on the track was the last chorus and repeat... which to me sounds the best out of the whole song, which I think is probably because of gained confidence.

As far as the harmonizing... man that's tough shit, I have to really concentrate... although I guess it's pretty loud and aggressive music i still like try to keep it melodic... I like a touch of harmonizing stuff in there... on vocals and guitars.
