here's a song

I think you should bring out the lead vocals a bit to give them more presence in the song, they're somewhat drowned in the busy arrangement. There's a lot of things happening in the background, which isn't all bad, but it all blends into one big mush. Bombastic but without impact. Can fatigue the listener a bit, I would think. I would like to have a more "separated" and "clear" mix. E.g. a brighter piano and a bit tighter bass tone wouldn't hurt.

Is the bass panned right during the stick (01:20-) or am I crazy?

Otherwise, it's a great song! I love it, and the vocalist is very good! :)

hi

very good tune, great voice but(unfortunately)no guitar solo!
just my opinion

Bang Pow Kawham

Way Cool ! Catchy song, Great vocals, nice mixture of sounds and textures, kept things interesting the whole time. Nice work, got some more ? I like it, Peace, Silver

listening on my cans i think it sounds very good, better than a majority of stuff posted here. i have to disagree with the mush statement. from where im sitting im not hearing it...of course ill be able to accurately listen when i get back home to my monitors. very good work.

Hi Oysterman, thanks a lot for checking it out. I hear what you're saying about the bombast and stuff. I always tend to have these grand ideas with strings and crap, and then when it's time to mix it, I'm like, ugh, I'm sick of this song, I don't want to deal with all this junk, it's too hard to mix! Yes, the bass is panned in the bridge, I was sort of going for a retro type 60's mix in that part. Thanks again.

Hi wilkoryte, thanks a lot. And the vocalist (my girlfriend) thanks you, too. When you said that about no guitar solo, made me realize I haven't really been putting improv type solos in anything lately. Gonna have to do that!!

Hi silverhammer, thanks, I really appreciate it!! Yep, got a bunch of tunes. Sort of working towards a CD (maybe after starting over and remixing everything, I'll be done by 2010!!).

Hi Scriabin, thanks! No mush? That would be good. Let me know what you think after hearing on your monitors. Greatly appreciated.

Hi Gargamel, you and Oysterman do look a lot alike, like clones.

She's got a great voice, bring it up a bit. The backups are louder!

I envy your music, Macle. I still LOOK better than you do, though.

Sideburns. :D

Vocals need to be brought forward, not louder, but sounding seperate from the background .

time:

.32 sec. - vocals and instruments sound muddled.

1.07 - 1.09- sounds warbled.

Pro talent and mix. Vocals and back-ups sounded on the dime to me. Great song, thanks for sharing...

rockin little tune I don't hear much I don't like than again I'm not anybodies producer either in regards to mixing. I might clarify the snare a bit but thats a personal thing I love a good definitive snap on any snare.I mean we good all get anal on alot of everybodies stuff out but what counts is a decent enuff representation of your tune whiich you more than captured here. Great stuff cheers Gag

Catchy tune and a great arrangement. Great vocals. Need to be more upfront. I can hear the backing vocals more at the moment.

Welcome back Macle!

Great tune. I am going to give it another listen at home. But on my cheapo headphones I also thought that it could use a bit more vocal seperation.

Did you just use overhead(s) to mic the drum kit? I think that most of us are so used to hearing everything on the kit seperated that we feel somethings is off if it isn't. I thought it gave added a nice vintage flavor to the mix.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but sounds like you used the TLM for vocals (did you get that NTK yet?) The effect (flange?) on the vox makes for an interesting and thick sound but it can be a bit distracting, maybe you could dry it up a bit in parts where it stands out. Your girlfriend really let's loose on this song and shows her wild side (I really like the raspyness in contrast to the smooth sounding vocals in despair) Her voice is amazing. Does she have a sister? ;)

Go over your rig again and how you recorded this song.

I liked the beatle-esque outro, also the sampled stuff sounded great.

Keep crankin em out and sign me up for an autograph copy of the cd!!!;)

Thanks Kelly. Hey, I got sideburns!! Analog ones. Warm and fuzzy.

How might you do that?

Hi David. Thanks a lot, man, I really appreciate it.

Hi Gag, thanks a lot. I don't mind people being anal with what they hear is wrong or don't like. It's great to get that feedback. Will definitely use what people say for trying to improve the mix, (including trying to make the snare have more snap!)

Hi Keijo, thanks!!
I'm pretty convinced by everyone's comments that the backgrounds are too loud, and the lead needs to come up!!

Hey Virtual Samana, thank you. Yes, just overheads on the drums. I was trying to go for a sound like The Beatle's song Glass Onion, which, for some reason, I thought this song was kinda like in some ways, but the drums didn't really turn out like that. The lead vocal was recorded with a number of different mics, which sort of added to the difficulty of making it all work together. I used a Rode Classic ll (borrowed), the TLM103, and the bridge is the Rode NTK. I was going insane trying to get a setup that would work on raspy type singing, which I love (I may have ruined my girlfriend's voice, making her sing that way :) ), and the TLM was not helping at all. The flange effect, I don't know what that is, that must be mp3ing or something. As far as whether she has any sisters, she's got a million, but, believe me, you don't wanna go there!!!

The rig: Epiphone Casino, Vox AC-15 (borrowed), Trace Elliot Vellocette, Fender Jazz bass (Korean, I think, but not bad), Martin DM acoustic, Brent Averill API, Distressor, Emu Paris, Waves Ren plugins, Gigasampler, Alesis QS8 (which I hate!!), Yamaha Stage Custom drums with a Slingerland maple snare (cheap, but pretty okay.)

Thanks again,
Macle

macle,

Absolutely awesome!!

I agree the vocal could come up a little. Man can you guys sing!!

Great tune, playing, etc.

Great work!!

Macle,

Cool song and great beat. Real Drums? I have to say that its mixed and done perfect! I cant hear anything wrong with it. The vocals to me seem loud enough. What kind of setup do you have?

To answer a question, I dont use Waves, I record on a external hard disk, but I went with your settings tonight and tweaked it and got a great sound out of my compressor and preamp for the first time. I wish I would of knew of this a couple weeks ago. Thanks!

John

Hi John,
Thanks a lot. I listed my setup right up above there, a couple posts back. Might as well paste it:

Glad those settings worked out, that's great!

Thanks again,
Macle

Hey Macle checked out your web site!

"Rags" is my favorite. I've been listening to it over and over. The tension build up is great. The song demonstrates your vocal prowess (Damn you can sing!) I really enjoyed the lyrics as well. Have you debuted it yet here? I am sure others would really enjoy it as well. Looks like your close to completing a CD. Can't wait!

I will under no circumstances, install Real Player on this computer. :)
