I'm learning as much as I can now, I've been posting alot of stuff with questions. I don't wanna be posting a bunch of threads and clog the server up, so I'm gonna bunch a few questions together.

First, I wanted to know about mixing & mastering. I'm well aware that these two are vital in music production & recording. I need a few links to help me get an idea of mixing & mastering, possibly a few pages with a glossary & basic mixing info. On the mastering tip, the same thing I just need a basic description so I can begin to understand them better as I go along.

Second, I wanted to ask about analog & digital. I'm not educated but I'd say more & more people use digital than analog, maybe I dont know enough to make that a statement but I want to study over analog & digital before I start saving up on my setup Id like to start saving for real soon. I know theres virtual analog, like a Nord Lead rack or Virus rack. Which is better for production in r&b, hip-hop & soul? What are the advantages of VA? Am I better off going with digital for a start & swaying off into VA later on as I go on & gain more knowledge?

Third, I wanna learn about acoustical treatment. All that limbo & stuff about tuning a room. Just some links to sites where I can sit down for awhile & read up on them, so I can start to get a very rough idea of what or if I even wanna throw up some foam, traps & so on in my room. I don't even know the purpose of foam & all of the other acoustic materials, so some information on that could help me out alot. I hope I get some help, I usually do here at HR.

Thanks much, Peace.

Theres tons of info in the studio forum you can search through. Do
a search on John Sayers here at the site he has a very good site
for studio building.

Thanks!

Thanks DW!

John Sayers? I think I caught that name somewhere here, I think it was in the Studio Building/Display forum. I'll check him out man, thanks again. Peace.

On Analog vs. digital I would say if it's money your saving to go one way or the other, save it for digital. I've found that saving the tape expense and hassle alone has made it worth the investment to track digitally. And I feel that there is alot more ease of use as far as mixing goes when done on the computer rather than with audio hardware that I have no clue how to use yet. My studio has also become much less an audio troubleshooting frenzy since we switched over to digital. That's my $.02 :D

Hmm..

Thanks Barometer, I'm most likely to go with digital because of all the ease difference between the two. But I do like analog also, I heard that Dr. Dre used the Nord Lead module to produce all the warm sounds in his last album Chronic 2001. That album is one of the albums I really look up to, the production is great & I can play the whole album through, twice!

Anyways, I've gotten more answers now & I'm learning fast. More & more people contribute some help, I love this board!

Thanks again all, Peace.

I'm just the opposite of Barometer.

I hate to use a computer for music. I use it to upload tracks to the internet and that's it. If I could do it without a computer I would. Most of the times I just wanna pull out my hair. I can't even upload a stereo mix.

I HAVE to have a physical console in front of me with lots of knobs, buttons and switches. I don't care for that virtual stuff. I mean, doing a whole mix with a mouse and an alpha-numeric keyboard.

I just don't feel very in-touch or in-control with what I'm doing on a computer. Don't get me wrong. I know HTML and a bunch of business software programs, and CAD, but I don't get my music involved with computers.

Yeah, I like to watch the big 10.5 reels turning around and the meters bouncing too. I will gladly spend the money on tape to have the control that I feel comfortable with.

Digital is not good or bad, it's just different from what I like and have grown up learning to use.

Interesting..

Thanks Sennheiser, I completely understand the perspective that your coming from. I know theres digital heads, then all the analog heads. I'm not sure quite what I want, but I'm sure in the end Ill figure it all out & be making music before I know it. I like all of the things I hear about analog but I know absolutely nothing about it so I cant give my opinion. But thanks, I'm slowly gaining more & more knowledge as the road continues. I appreciate it, Peace.

Actually I'm not either kind of head. We used strictly analog until recently and I loved it just as much. I have no qualms about taking analog equipment (which has proven itself over the years) and doing a great job with it. I just converted over and it's really the ease of use that has me excited. No tapes...what a godsend. I too like knobs, sliders and buttons. And you can always track analog and just digitize later. I just really like having it all in the computer at my disposal to do with it whatever I please and store it on HDs and CDs. I also like having all my FX at my disposal on the computer (I don't have much good audio hardware). Just difference of opinion, equipment and expertise. I was a computer geek looking for recording solutions. Some people just don't like computers and are really good with audio equipment. I don't think one is necessarily "better" than the other. It depends on who you are :D

Thanks!

Great link, thanks JCMM.

I hear you Barometer, I understand now. I'm not gonna let other people choose for me, Ill head into a L&M to look around soon. I appreciate all the help, I'm getting an idea of what I'm buying. I'm gonna stick with digital, thanks all who helped out. Peace.
