No, that's the going price for the 3630 pretty much everywhere. But the people on this BB have been so busy trashing that comp, that I'm surprised anyone is interested anymore. There's a thread from a few weeks back where I tried to defend the unit (considering price point, features, etc), and we opened up the whole can of worms again. I don't know; I haven't had the problems with mine that a lot of other people seem to have. But I bought mine years ago (and spent about $250 for it), so I think there might be a more recent quality-control issue.

gelon, you mean to tell me that you can't notice the overwhelming
sound artifacts produced by the 3630!!?? Considerable "pumping"is extremely noticeable when using the limiter! One must ride the gain hi in order to compensate for lost volume during use of the the Thresh and Ratio controls.
The only use for the 3630 is in negating the audible amount of
inherent "hiss" found in drum machines which the limiter is suitable for! Please, don't even start me up on it's compressor and gating functions!!!

Mistercutie! Are you saying that all those Porterhouse mixes I have posted that you seemed to love so much had "overwhelming sound artifacts produced by the 3630!!?? Considerable "pumping"is extremely noticeable when using the limiter!"?????

I guess all those bass tracks I mixed through it didn't sound very good and I should have just kept the 3630 for cutting down his on the drum machines we didn't use on the project or something.

I am shamed!!! I use the darn 3630 on almost everything I post in the Mixing Clinic. Everybody that compliments my mixes MUST be lying to me about how they sound since the 3630 is just ruining the whole thing!!!

I WILL agree though that there is some insertion loss. Only about 2dB though. I can live with it to get the kind of color only a 3630 will give certain instruments.

Again, I don't recommend it as a main compressor, but if you have one, or have a few bucks sitting around and what some more variety in your compression, for $100, it is a good unit to have around. Check it out WELL once you get it, and return it if it is doing anything funky! But hell, a lot of people don't know enough about using compression to make that judgement anyway, so what they might be hearing as bad things COULD just be misapplied compression in the first place! Who knows...certainly not me. Just a big dummy here who uses a 3630 A LOT on stuff I mix. So you really shouldn't listen to anything I have to say about it!!! I am crazy to own one in the first place, and certainly certifiably insane for actually USING it on a track in a mix for clients that pay me money to make their stuff sound good. Hell, those customers MUST be really deaf not to hear all the bad things a 3630 does to their sound.

I guess when I ran that bass track through it, and had around 10dB of gain reduction happening with no pumping/breathing AT ALL, I was really just hearing a bunch of bad sound artifacts and didn't really notice how bad it was pumping and breathing!!! Silly me! I should get my hearing checked!!!!!

Ed

Yeah, I guess some of us are either deaf or just not as hip as the rest. And as for sarcasm, which I really appreciate, it takes a certain skill to make it come across in writing. Sorry I missed it...

Ed, I'm ashamed!! Truly ashamed! I've had the 3630 for 3 years now and have ONLY used it sparingly on Bass(for the wierd efx it produces)and on my drummachine (as it cancels out the box's
annoying "hiss") other than that I find the 3630 useless for most applications!!
Also, I think you're lyin'!! Those phat mixes you made couldn't have been done on the 3630!! My ears don't lie!

Gelon, I have absolutely no idea what or whom you are referring to!

When I bought mine, I immediately noticed the insertion loss, but It wasn't 2dB, but I also have preamps and volume knobs on other devices to alleviate that problem. The "color" you noted is the one thing that bugged me the most when I first got it. It only bugged me because Im a whiner when it comes to my amp tone, once its set, any new device that alters it bugs me. I also whined about my last guitar purchase after plugging into the amp... Sonusman may correct me if Im wrong, but Ive come to believe that most devices have a specific character, no 2 compressors are alike. Why do large studios have such a large choice? Racked Neves and Avalons, tube and non tube, if every device was the same as the next there would only be one manufacturer. It would be a white box with black lettering that says compressor. Another thing Ive noticed about devices, is that the controls aren't exactly identical. The potentiometers are usually not exacly the same so turning it to a certain position is usually an approximate location. So when you turn the knob to its sweet spot on one compressor, it may more often than not give you a different answer than a competitors. The issue of what version has something to do with it to. I have 2 Rocktron Hush units, same model, different faceplates....One didn't work so I sent it back, the tech guy said there were some with some bad components in "some" of the units and they were being fixed..so I imagine like Ed said...some people might have bad units and maybe they should have been returned with a complaint...What about acknowledging that some people have a better time finding out how to make something work, I acknowledge that I sometimes can't see past a problem because Im too focused on the problem. Just voicing my opinions on the subject, Ive been known to be wrong quite abit quite often.

Peace,
Dennis

Glad you got it! I was beginning to worry about "our" capacity to...Nevermind. You guys can go back to sleep.

Dammit Ed! Where were you when I needed you a few weeks ago? I mentioned in passing that I used a nanocomp occasionally on bass because I like the sound of it and was verbally raped.:D Oh well, at least Ed agrees with something that I thought...unless of course he was being sarcastic...in which case I would be an idiot.
