what do you think of this : http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Recording/Computer/Hardware?sku=244230 ? im upgrading from an mr8hd to this. would this be a valuable investment that would last me a few years. i just want a few more inputs. would all the inputs be assigned to seperate tracks? I record bands and i want to do live shows so this would be nice to have. i usually record 2 guitars, bass, 2 vox tracks, and about 6 mics for drums.

also are there any good recording programs that are free for mac that could go with it?

You could Google it and find some reviews... the one I read in 'Electronic Musician' magazine was lukewarm, and mentioned some concerns regarding overall build sturdiness.

With so many interfaces to choose from nowadays, why go with a dark horse? Frankly, there aren't many folks using this compared to the known good things like RME FireFace, MOTU Traveler, E-MU 1820m, etc. I'd stay with the herd, myself.

And although I am fond of most all things French, audio technology hardware isn't really their strong suit. YMMV.

I remeber reading a review on this item in S.O.S
It was in the same issue as Presonus firepod.

And the review was allright, but no high praise.
The review on the firepod was way better, and it resulted in me buying it.

ONe more thing, I see the firepod is quite steady on its price, while the hercules has dropped significantly.

It might not be a thing, but price usually means something :)

There's a version of Ardour, the best Linux multitrack program, ported to OSX available for download at www.ardour.org.
