A buddy of mine (a drummer) is setting up a very simple recording thing in his basement. He bought a used Behringer Mixing station (still under warranty)which has built in pre's. and an unknown PC interface (4-channels I think). I gave him a few mics and my old copy of HS2004 to get started with in exchange for some of his services.

I gave him a couple non-stereo MXL 603s (for over-heads) and an MXL69 (set up out front on the floor, on it's side pointed slightly down...we have a special auralex holder thingy I made up for it). I found that this LD mic doesn't like the direct line of sight to the bass drum and if I back way off to decrease the SPL, the drum sounds too distant. Getting about 2 feet away, pointing it slightly down into the carpet at the bottom of the drum gives a nice punchy/thump sound but not too muffled. The toms come through rather nicely as well. I connected the mixer to the PC interface using the mixer channel inserts. His play back for now are his PC speakers and/or headset.

Before you guys go Behr-bashing, I've got to say all in all, things sound pretty decent. The room is a bit echo-ish but the recording and imaging sound pretty good. Here's the question;

Even with the trim pots turned all the way down, we're getting plenty of level into the PC card. In fact, when he "gets on" the bass drum, the only way to turn the level back is to pull the mic further from the set. I find this to be true with all the mics I've tried and all the channels on the mixer. I'm satisfied that the trim pots work because if I turn them up, zowie!!!

Any thoughts?

get a compressor/limiter, and just bring the output level down.

Thanks for the input...we've got software compressor/limiter in the HS2004 but as far as the gain goes, don't you think it's a bit hot? With my mackie I always have to add some gain to get the level up where I need it at my PC audio card...with this set up we're turned all the way down and still able to drive things pretty hard.

your "unknown" PC card might be the problem.

find out about it. it might have jumpers or software settings to boost/cut the input.

The card is a 2496...not familiar with this one but supposed to be similar but scaled down from a 1010. If that helps.
