hi have posted a few questions to find out what product i need and i think that this or a different brand should do the job .

http://www.alesis.com/product.php?id=93

basicly i want to record a whole band simoultaneously into cubase on sepearte tracks within cubase, not just one stereo track like the usb mixers. am i right in saying that if i bought this product it would cover the above needs?

I know little about recording so bear with me here. I also would like to find out why mixers are said to be i.e 12 track, 16, 8 track. obviously this is because they have that many tracks, but what i want to know is, how many of them tracks i can record into?.the reason I ask is because when i was reading the spec of the above product it states it has 4 xlr inputs and 2 stereo balanced 1/4 inputs, this equals only six INPUT channels, am i correct?? what are the other tracks for?

so finally is the above mixer what i need to record a whole band, on to separte tracks within cubase?

cheers

You'll need a Firewire input, but if so, it would appear that it would work.

4 XLR + (L and R) x 2 = 8. It has eight channels, and will send eight individual feeds (or maybe four mono and two stereo) to the FW outs. You would have to have external pres to use mics with the stereo ins, but all of them will send signals to the Firewire output. A mixer doesn't "record" anything, so your question is worded a little wrong*. I haven't checked prices, but you'll probably spend less getting a mixer with the number of pres you need, rather than buying a bunch of outboard pres. Of course, if you planned on using four line-level sources, and four mics, you don't have a problem right now.

*Edit: mixers are not said to have "tracks," they have channels, inputs, sends, outs, etc. Double-check you link, there is no mention of "tracks" on the mixer.
