im trying to make a tape for this girl. All i have to work with are cassette tapes, guitar, and like a really old boombox w/ 1-touch recording. It is sounding like crap (maybe cause i cant sing all too well) But there's a huge echo and everything sounds tinny. That may very well be because of the old boombox. And i realize that this ghetto method of recording can only sound so good. So any advice at all (like which room would be best or any techniques) would be GREAT!!!!

i think in the shower with the water running will sound good. i know i always sound good that way.

If you really can't get anything else to work with, then yeah, it's gonna sound tinny and crappy. If it's echoey, you might be able to reduce that by recording in a "deader" environment (say, a carpeted living room with drapes and furniture), and making sure that the microphone is not picking up what's coming out of your speakers. Try putting the mic behind the box, away from the speakers, and keep the volume low.

If the mic is attached to the box, then yeah, it's gonna sound tinny and crappy *and* echoey--even if you sing and play well. You can only apply so much technique to such a limited setup.

Then again, you're making this to get a girl, yes? Write decent songs and she's bound to be impressed by the effort, if not the sound quality.

Try to get something better to record on if you can. Camcorders sometimes sound surprisingly good, if you have one around. But you'd be best off with a four-track or a PC setup, unless this is the only recording you plan to make.

Good luck

Man you dont have a lot to work with. the bathroom usually has some acoustics to it, but you seem like you have enough echo already. I really would suggest if you plan on doing this again, invest in a tape recorder that is designed for that. Even then the only tape recoders I know off wont give you the quality you may be looking for. You can go to radio shack and get the Optimus brand Cat # 14-1123. I used that one for music when I was dirt broke, cost me about 60.00. I was happy for a long time but then again, I wasn't trying to impress a female. Good Luck.

I would make a videotape of yourself singing under the shower. You can ask her to do the same in reply!
