ok so im in band and stuff.

and everytime we record the sound quality just sucks on the computer and stuff.

what can you do to fix this?

Go to a real studio, or at least some guy in a basement that knows what the hell he's doing. Just as an example of why this is a hard question to answer, asking how to fix YOUR problem is like someone who can't play guitar,and is trying to figure out how, asking, "how do I fix this problem?".

It's pretty simple, really.

All you have to do is learn about acoustics, microphone selection and placement, PCM recording characteristics, gain staging, setting up an efficient and effective signal chain, soundcard/recording interface characteristics, preamp characteristics, the mixing fundamentals of volume, panning, eq and effects, maybe a little bit about compression (dynamics management), how to deliver good core sounds for recording (eg. intonating your guitars properly, selecting decent guitars & amps to record the sounds, dialing the sounds in properly, nailing the performance etc...) and a bit about the mastering process so's you don't get caught up in some cheap kind of volume war expectation anxiety syndrome. Oh, and your monitoring chain should be in there somewhere. There's probably more, (like the experience factor) but that should be enough to start with.

Could you describe a bit more about the exact nature of sucking involved?

15 or not, your best way to get better recordings would be to learn the process, or just concentrate on playing and let someone who knows what they're doing handle the recording stuff. ($$$)

If you want, you might tell us what kind of computer & sound interface & recording process you're using.

You might also want to start reading something like this if you want to get into the recording process more. Knowledge and experience will take you farther than spending money on gear, and if you know exactly what you want when the time comes, you could actually save a lot of money from avoiding stuff that you don't need, or won't do what you expect. It's a basic and pretty comprehensive introduction guide to recording.

There's also a few great recording forums to check out, plus PDF documents on manufacturer websites that can help you for free if you have an internot connection. There's also books and magazines that can help if you want to drop a little coin on the subject. It all helps.

It will take a lot of time, work and experience to get good at it, but what the hey, you know?

Everyone is a bit hard on this guy...although that’s understandable, some quick easy noob tips before people start getting complicated?


Use a fair quality microphone i.e. not the one from you webcam

Make sure you computer is grunty enough otherwise you recordings can majorly be screwed up i.e. I previously to used a "darned (#@$@)" laptop and everything was recorded 0.3 seconds out of time (sounded disgusting)

maybe tell us what recording software your using and we can recommend better or give you some more tips
