It's pretty simple, really.
All you have to do is learn about acoustics, microphone selection and placement, PCM recording characteristics, gain staging, setting up an efficient and effective signal chain, soundcard/recording interface characteristics, preamp characteristics, the mixing fundamentals of volume, panning, eq and effects, maybe a little bit about compression (dynamics management), how to deliver good core sounds for recording (eg. intonating your guitars properly, selecting decent guitars & amps to record the sounds, dialing the sounds in properly, nailing the performance etc...) and a bit about the mastering process so's you don't get caught up in some cheap kind of volume war expectation anxiety syndrome. Oh, and your monitoring chain should be in there somewhere.
