I am a bass player who is getting into midi live proformance and I don't have alot of experiance with sound modules. I am using Cakewalk guitar pro 2 and a proteus 1 XR.My problem is in the setup I can't seem to get the Proteus to play the sound that Cakewalk is putting out.I know it's in the set up but don't know what to look for since this is all new to me.

Here are links to two good articles on midi basics - part one and part two.

Are you trying to be a one-man band? if so, all you need to know should be in this series of articles. If not your bandmates should probably read these too...

thanks

Thanks for the articles they are helpful. What I need is someone who has worked with a Proteus and can talk me thur the internal set up as far as what mode, preset enable , patch. and so on. I know it's something simple but ..hey I'm just a bassplayer.

Do you have a midi interface? If not, buy this.

If you're running Windows XP all you need to do is make the settings inside Cakewalk to recognize the interface. Then set up three midi tracks keeping in mind that this is just an example. Make one percussion - just a single sound will do. The next one should be a bass sound and the next a string sound. Single notes on these two will fill the bill. Make sure the drum/percussion is on midi channel 1, the bass on ch. 2 and the strings on ch. 3. Then set the three tracks to loop in a four bar loop.

Now on to the Proteus. Set it in 'multi' mode and assign the first slot to a percussion sound. Then move to the next slot and assign a bass patch. The third sould be a string sound. Now save the patch under the name 'ssscience' so you can tell it from your songs. If you have a mixer with all four outs from the Proteus plugged in you should be hearing our little not-so-creative loop. These are the general principles, and you should be able to adapt them to your own songs without much trouble.

I can do this . The thing I can't do is take a song that is pre programed and get the Proteus to play the proper sequence of instrumentation. I have to manually change each track on the sound module. I know that the Cake walk should tell the Proteus the proper setup, but it isn't. :(

Fortunately there's a way to deal with this problem using program change commands.

First, look in the Cakewalk manual for where program changes are specified. Then look in the Proteus manual to determine the appropriate program number. Insert the number into the sequencer and save the file. Every time you bring up the song, the Proteus and the sequencer will be in perfect harmony!
