Help!

I've got a gig tomorrow night and for some reason we have to kit share. Something about saving time and space or whatever. Anyway, the drummer apparently doesn't use a rack tom. He only uses a floor. So I have to bring my tom and tom arm but I don't know if they are going to be compatable with his kick.

I have a Mapex kit and he has a Yamaha kit. Would my tom arm fit? Is there a universal size for the holes?

I should know this sort of thing but hey, I'm a drummer.

You mightbe lucky, but if your shaft is bigger than his hole (ew!), you're screwed.

Your best bet would be to bring your kick along as well, or have him use that

Yup, I think that's the plan. It's in the same town so if it fits I could always get someone to take mine back after the soundcheck.

It does save a lot of time and space, especially if there are more than two bands on the bill. Makes it a lot easier on the sound man, too. This happens a lot where I am, and often it extends to amps and cabinets. For a drummer, though, it's the worst, because we all set up our kits to our own taste.

I often kit share at gigs, I'm just a bit pissed that it wasn't my kit we were using and we have to use a kit without a rack tom.

I do a lot of live sound. And that's pretty much bullshit having a guy with a 3 piece have his kit instead of yours. You should use yours and take off the rack for when he plays. That would be easiest. I don't think the arm will fit, Mapex uses a 7/8 inch tube and I believe yamaha uses a smaller one. You'd need some type of clamp to fix to a cymbal stand or something like that.

Your tom arm should fit into one of the tubes on one of your cymbal stands. Take a stand along to make a makeshift tom stand.

The promoter came up with the plan that I use my snare stand as a tom stand. I could see this turning into one of those stomach wrenchingly horrible gigs - so I've managed to negotiate that I use my kit. It's a bit of a nightmare because I have a 17 hour flight to Thailand a few hours after the gig and I now need to shuttle the frikkin' drums home in a taxi before getting to the airport.

Oh well, that's rockn'roll for you. I'll be under a palm tree sipping coconut shakes and forgetting all about it in a day or so.
