I;m recording our young Men's Ensemble at Church tomorrow night.

It consists of 6 singers, a pianist and possible a trumpet solo or duo.

The Main Question I have is this. Would a Behringer ECM Mic be good as a room mike or would a Generis GC-1 (cheap LD Condenser) be better?

The auditorium has high ceilings, approx 35-40 ft high the walls are approx 25 feet apart and the lenght is approx 45-50 feet from stage to rear of auditorium.. This is just my guesstimation. Sorry...I slacked off and didn't get the proper info in time...its kind of last minute.

I plan on this setup
Men: MD421's Stage Right and Stage Left
Piano: Crown PZM (never used one before)
Trumpets: Single SM57 or Shure 515SD (with room ambiance blended in)
Room: This is where I need your help guys!

The PZM has its own Phantom Power.
The 421's I plan on using my Behringer t1953 preamp
the Room mic would be thru another Behringer (VX2000) for the phantom power and pre.

1. Which Mike should I use for the room?
2. Any idea where to place it?

3. Mic placemnt for the 421's?
I was just going to boom them right/left about 7 feet high each facing the center of the group but on opposite corners.

4. The PZM. Can anyone shed some light?

Oh yeah my weak link is a Tascam 424 MKIII. I plan on upgrading sometime soon. That's another story. Sorry about the mega long post. Any and all help is appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!

I would use the ECM because it is omni IF I could find a good place to put it. The Generis is cardoid so it is not going to pick up the whole room ambience, just what it is pointed at. However that can be an advantage if you have to put it near something you don't want to pick up too strongly. Just point it away.

In other words you would want to put your room ambience mic where it would not pick up a few closest audience members too loudly or pick up certain musicians louder than the others.

On the 421's, since your group is six members I would instead put the pair of 421s on a single stand in an XY position.

Here is a shure guild that might be helpfull

You need some more mics too... anyway, I think I'd try having the 6 singers group simi-around the ECM8000 and use the MD421's on the horns, and use the PZM (tape it to the lid) and whatever on the piano.

I don't know if I really like your mic selection / setup.

I'd want to use a couple of condensers somewhere out in front in either an XY or spaced pair config. I think the 421's are great mics, don't get me wrong . . . but normally I prefer using them for close micing of single instruments rather than as a "bigger picture" sort of deal. For that I'd want a couple of mostly flat/neutral wide cardiods (MC-012?).

As for your room mic idea, the Behringer might work and it might not. It depends entirely on how loud your group is and how far back you plan on placing it. Your signal to noise ratio on that bugger is going to be painfully unbalanced in favor of the "noise" at times. :D A condition that may be worsened by your choice of preamps (Behringer). If your group is good and loud, and you place it fairly close (within 12 feet or so), then this shouldn't be an issue. It will still serve just fine as a room mic.

Guys...Thanks for all the advice!!

I know my Behringer stuff isn't the best. Hopefully I'll graduate to "real" gear soon. I'll take all of the suggestions into consideration and let you know how I made out.
