So check it out, my friend and I are building a recording studio within a few weeks. We have some funds gathered together, however I know nothing about computers, my friend does who works at best buy. Now I'm asking you guys for an opinion on what kind of computer and sound card to buy. We have around $500.00 plus for a computer and sound card. We need the computer to run smoothly and have enough room for recording. I'm looking to record a lot of tracks but 8 at once. He is suggesting an EMachine computer for around 400 and then a soundcard he is unsure of.
We are looking to be using these to give you an idea of what we're using quality wise.
-Presonus Firepod
-Event TR8 Monitors
-Beyerdynamic Opus Drum Mic Package (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/OpusDrumPkSE)
-AKG C414

Now like I said before, we are fairly new to this so help us get a machine that will be problem free. And naturally we will have no extras on it, just our recording program and songs, no internet whatsoever.

Thanks so much for your help...

p.s. whats a good sound card!

You said you would be using a Firepod? Although technically that's called an "Audio Interface" it has all the functions of a sound card, plus built in preamps, etc. Should be a good choice for your application. You don't need a sound card besides that (if that's what you're asking). Most any brand of computer should be fine. Look for as much RAM as you can afford, and if possible get one with two fast (7200 RPM) hard drives in it.

so wait

we dont need a good soundcard? With the firepod as the audio interface we just need the computer? That sounds good to me but I thought that that was with the digi 002 that you didnt need the pci sound card, are you saying the same goes with the firepod?

Nope - the firepod will provide both the audio inputs (8 channels) as well as outputs for your monitors. No additional soundcard needed.

awesome man thanks, now do you know anything on computers? Cause I need a computer thats fast enough to run a lot of tracks and not freeze up.

Almost anything you can buy new these days is going to be fast enough. Make sure you get plenty of RAM (at least 512 MB, and preferably 1GB or more) and like I said before, it would be advantageous to get two fast hard drives (one for the OS and applications, and the other for audio). Also, make sure you get one with a firewire connector for that Firepod ;)

if you go with Emachine. buy one with at least an AMD Athlon 64 processor. Its best to stay away from Intel Celeron and AMD Sempron. But if you ask me I'd stay away from Emachine all together. There not called Budget muchines for nothing. you will find yourself at the maximum CPU speed, maximum memory, and almost no PCI slots left. So not much room for upgrades.
Also word of advise. Dont buy stuff together. eather you buy it or your friend buy it.
