help with singing set up

all i want is advice on a simple set up for my daughter to record her singingon her laptop can n e one tell me what i need to set up a sm58 microphone to acer laptop ,windows 7 , wat cable do i need , also wat can boost the sound off the laptop is it a sound card?

if she carries on singing what would u suggest i get to help her along wat is essential but doesnt cost hundreds

If you want simplicity just get a "Blue Icicle XLR to USB converter preamp".

But once you and your daughter get serious about recording you'll need an interface (goggle up Tascam US1641 for an inexpensive example)and do away with the internal sound card.

as moresound(?) said, the icicle will convert the XLR stick to a USB stick and you can plug it right into the computer, which is an option. the quality wouldn't be awesome this way, but its workable. if you want a better option it would be to buy an usb audio interface and plug this into the computer, then plug the microphone into the audio interface. this would be way better...a decent usb audio interface is around $200 from new but u can get it used cheaper obviously
