help with quality

hey i am running a PC with cubase le,

i record with an alesis USB mixer and an MXL mic
my recordings are still not at that good quality levell i know im on a small budget but is there anything i can do/buy to fix this?

compress everything and turn up the levels till its about to clip
just look into compression turn the thresh hold down the gain up to comensate and the ratio is just how hard it compresses generally 3-5 is where you wanna keep it
